This humiliation at Obama's hands left Trump seething — and set up Kimmel's downfall

The one thing Trump can’t take is a joke, especially one at his expense.

Yesterday — one day after ABC pulled Jimmy Kimmel’s show off the air “indefinitely,” after pressure from the chairman of Trump’s Federal Communications Commission — Trump said federal regulators should revoke broadcast licenses over late-night hosts who speak negatively about him.

“They’re giving me all this bad press, and they’re getting a license,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One. “I would think maybe their license should be taken away.”

It was bad enough in the early 1950s when the U.S. government criminalized certain speech during Joe McCarthy’s communist witch hunts. Those witch hunts were directed at alleged members of the Communist Party who supposedly posed a threat to America (although the vast majority of them were loyal Americans).

Late-night comedians pose no conceivable threat to America. They make people laugh.

But they do pose a potential threat to Trump.

CBS’s cancellation of Stephen Colbert’s Late Show was announced just days after Colbert slammed CBS’s parent company, Paramount, for giving Trump $16 million to settle Trump’s defamation suit — which Colbert called a "big, fat bribe” to get the FCC to allow Paramount to merge with and be acquired by Skydance Media.

Colbert was correct, of course.

Trump’s response to Colbert’s cancellation? “I absolutely love that Colbert' got fired. His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next.”

Kimmel was next, and it’s probably not coincidental that ABC has also been a target of Trump’s defamation ire, finally settling with him for the same amount, $16 million.

Trump’s response to Jimmy Kimmel’s cancellation this week? "Great news for America.” Trump then added, “[t]hat leaves Jimmy [Fallon] and Seth [Meyers], two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC."

What does Trump have against late-night comedians?

For as long as anyone can remember, they’ve been a source of jokes about those in power. In the wake of Kimmel’s firing, David Letterman, the longtime late-night host, said he’d routinely beat up on president after president over the years, and “not once were we squeezed by anyone from any governmental agency. Everyone sort of understood [it was] in the name of humor.”

But Trump hates to be the object of humor. Some deep part of his reptilian brain understands that humor can be a more powerful antidote to tyranny than any other form of criticism.

Laughter doesn’t just entertain, it subverts. Humor undermines tyrannical power that relies on projecting an image of inevitability and invincibility, by making a tyrant appear weak and vulnerable. Check one against Trump.

Laughter also undermines fear, which is used by tyrants to maintain control. When the public laughs at a leader, his oppressive control weakens. Check two against Trump.

Finally, humor can remind people they’re not alone. When a joke is widely shared, it reveals that opposition is widespread, which can encourage and validate resistance. Check three against Trump.

At some level, Trump understands this.

It’s also true that Trump’s fragile ego can’t stand to be ridiculed.

Anyone who watched the 2011 White House Correspondents' Dinner got a glimpse of how much Trump hates being mocked. President Obama and Seth Meyers spent nearly five minutes roasting Trump over his promotion of the "birther" conspiracy theory. The audience roared. But Trump appeared to seethe. Some of his biographers have speculated that this event was a key factor in his decision to run for president in 2016.

Finally, Trump seems constitutionally unable to recognize humor.

Unlike John F. Kennedy, whose wit encouraged us to laugh with him, or Ronald Reagan, whose funny asides endeared him to many who disagreed with his politics, Trump is humorless.

He doesn’t laugh. He rarely smiles. He occasionally tells a humorous story at the expense of someone or some group he dislikes but he is incapable of self-deprecating humor.

We don’t laugh with Trump. We only laugh at him.

In 2018, during his speech at the United Nations, his claim that “in less than two years, my administration has accomplished more than almost any administration in the history of our country” drew loud guffaws from world leaders. (Taken aback, Trump responded, “Didn’t expect that reaction, but that’s okay.”)

For all these reasons, Trump’s war on late-night comedians may be his undoing.

It’s one thing to declare war on crime or undocumented workers or even liberals. But everyone loves to laugh.

As Letterman said, “the institution of the President of the United States ought to be bigger than a guy doing a talk show, you know You can’t go around firing somebody because you’re fearful [that they’ll get a laugh]. That’s just not how this works.”

'Oh my god!' Jon Stewart drops F-bomb on 'Daily Show' as he shreds Trump's helicopter tale

"The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart issued a searing takedown of recent comments from former President Donald Trump, even dropping a profanity as he recounted the MAGA leader's helicopter tale.

The comedian kicked off his Monday night show by slamming the highly-anticipated — and widely panned — interview between tech billionaire Elon Musk and a slurring former President Donald Trump, sarcastically calling it an "amazing and surprisingly life-affirming conversation."

Stewart jabbed Trump and Musk's rambling conversation — which already started 40 minutes late due to technical issues — joking that his favorite part was when the two traded their favorite Maya Angelou passages.

"My interpretation of the Caged Bird is singing for Bitcoin," he joked, referencing the poet's famous autobiography "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings."

After slamming Trump's "smart choice" of a running mate, Stewart poked the MAGA leader for essentially having to "start all over" with his attacks, now that President Joe Biden is out of the race.

"The audience literally has to sit through him getting up to speed," chided Stewart.

The show played a montage of Trump mispronouncing — and deliberately mistyping — "Kamala," as Stewart retorted: "I get 'Kuh-mala.' I get 'Kah-mala.' But 'Kamabla?'"

"Judges: are we taking 'Kamabla?'" he asks, answered by a buzzer noise.

Stewart took a moment to mock Trump's comments during an interview with the National Association of Black Journalists, in which he questioned Harris' racial identity.

"'What am I going to do with all the Indian ethnic slurs I was going to use?'" Stewart asks, imitating Trump's speech and hand gestures. "It mostly involved turmeric and cumin. And she made a turn into Black."

The comedian then laid into Trump's story that he nearly died in a helicopter crash with former San Francisco Mayor Willie Brown. After mocking the former president for claiming that as the chopper was going down — in 1990 — Brown turned to him and started bashing Harris, Stewart and his show delivered a haymaker, playing a clip of Brown suggesting it possible Trump was actually with another Black man — and made a mistake.

"That is so f---ed up! I'm sure that is not what happened," Stewart shouted. "What are the chances Trump is just mixing up his Black people?"

He then played a clip of an MSNBC host confirming it was former Los Angeles area lawmaker Nate Holden, who is also Black, confirming it was he who was actually in the helicopter.

"Oh my god!" Stewart says in disbelief. "Do you know what this means? Nate Holden, former Los Angeles city council member, told Donald Trump as their helicopter was going down bad things about Kamala Harris! That I guess Willie Brown had told him — if they knew each other!"

"That is the only explanation, right?" jabbed Stewart.

Daily Show's Jon Stewart sings at Harris' arrival and makes offer to seething Republicans

"The Daily Show" host Jon Stewart marveled at the one-week turnaround for Democrats as he celebrated the energetic arrival of Vice President Kamala Harris into the presidential race.

The overjoyed Stewart did his best Monday night to sing "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross, then used his typical cutting humor to jab media outlets, lawmakers and pundits who said President Joe Biden couldn't be replaced on the ticket to face former President Donald Trump.

After playing a montage of several prominent figures — including MSNBC host Joy Reid and Rep. Robert Garcia of California — insisting the vote would be between Biden and Trump, Stewart took a victory lap.

"Listen man," he exclaimed, "the pundits said it couldn't happen, but it did happen! And the Republicans are not very happy about it!"

He then launched into a montage of prominent GOP figures such as Fox News host Sean Hannity decrying the Democratic ticket swap as a "coup."

"But I get it," Stewart retorts. "If I thought I had this thing in the bag and that you were going to going up against old Joe Biden and they they pull this, I'd be like, 'Ref! Ref! Open your eyes! How can you see they're not couping?! They're couping!'"

Stewart said it makes sense the GOP is upset, and offered a consolation prize.

"I do understand that they're upset. It makes sense. So how about we do this. Out of fairness. I'm a fair person. You can replace your old guy, too," he quipped.

'Find a respectable conservative': Jon Stewart slammed over Bill O’Reilly interview

"The Daily Show" host and comedian Jon Stewart was under fire Tuesday night for having former Fox News host Bill O’Reilly on the popular show to talk about political fanaticism and extreme rhetoric.

Earlier in the show, Stewart shredded Republicans for calling for "unity" and "healing" despite doing the opposite in the wake of the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump that left one person slain. He then hosted O'Reilly for a 12-minute discussion on the state of politics that led to the shooting, and to discuss his new book “Confronting the Presidents.”

O'Reilly made the case that today, "hatred is rewarded."

"The hate brigade is now pulling back a little bit, because they have to, but they're going to be back in two weeks," he said. "Because they get paid to do this."

As Stewart and O'Reilly started to talk over each other, O'Reilly interjected, eventually saying "We are able to disagree without hating each other."

"Now, I truly hate him," O'Reilly joked, to laughs from Stewart and the audience. "But I don't show it!"

That type of "detente," he said, is no longer rewarded.

"The haters get the big money," said O'Reilly.

O'Reilly continued blasting everyone from "conspiratorial nuts" in their basements to corporations that label people racists and Nazis.

An introspective Stewart joked that he and O'Reilly both made fortunes by pushing the envelope and being "provocative."

"Shouldn't the argument be, we have to start arguing with each other in good faith?" noted Stewart.

The two agreed they made a "nice living" confronting others, whether through making fun of them or via "serious debate."

"But we don't want to see them destroyed," noted O'Reilly. "That's the difference."

But the internet wasn't buying what Stewart (and O'Reilly) were selling.

"Well this is disappointing," wrote @davidzack on X.

"Ugh!!! @jonstewart !!! Really, Bill O’Reilly ?!?" a stunned @amooredunn wrote. "Find a respectable conservative… I know the pickins’ are slim but try harder!"

"Boooo!!!" wrote @CapndblA, adding three thumbs-down emojis.

Multiple users pointed out that O'Reilly, once a top-rated cable news host, was forced out in 2017 from Fox News after a series of sexual harassment allegations against him came to light.

"so you can have a sexual harasser on as long as he has a book to sell," wrote @gimponastick. "how f---ing gross."

"It’s so cool to platform sexual predators. Do Harvey Weinstein next!" jabbed @merlnich1.

Jon Stewart jabs latest Trump flub: 'Under MAGA law, his name is now Ronny Johnson'

Jon Stewart on Monday night hit both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump on "The Daily Show," lamenting that this year's presidential election features a pair of nominees so past their primes that each has accused the other of having "soup ... where there should be brain."

In his opening monologue, Stewart laid into Biden over a video — since debunked as misleading — that purported to show Biden wandering away during a G7 summit event in Italy late last week.

"For President Biden it is his habit of seemingly staring at what can only be considered ghosts or out-of-frame paratroopers," Stewart said. "And then, somehow getting pulled back into frame, somehow giving the impression someone has just quantum-leaped into his body."

Stewart jabbed again at the 81-year-old president putting on his sunglasses in the clip, remarking. "No don't look directly at the sun, sir."

But the comedian spent the next two minutes leveling the former president, saying Trump was "basically tripping over his own d--- anytime he tries to capitalize on Biden's age."

Stewart pointed to Trump's appearance in Detroit over the weekend at a "Turning Point Action" event — a group founded by conservative activist and commentator Charlie Kirk — as exhibit A of the MAGA leader's cognitive slide.

It was here where a snarky Stweart said Trump "articulated his case for having best, brainful neurons ... smart."

The show played a clip of Trump attempting to criticize Biden at the event with a perhaps elementary- or middle-school-style dig: "Joe Biden has no plan, he's got absolutely no plan. He doesn't even know what the word inflation means."

"Oh, oh you didn't!" Stewart yells to laughs before mocking Trump's ill-advised jab at Biden's comprehension of the economic metric.

"Joe Biden's so dumb," Stwart then deadpans, "he thinks inflation is a rise in the overall price level for goods and services in the economy as measured by the consumer price index over time. Oh s---!"

The comedian then jokes, "It turns out that is what is. I'm sorry. I'm being told that is what inflation is. But still! You tell him Donny T."

Stewart then launches into a devastating case against Trump.

"The case he's making to the American public is that he's sharpest tool in the shed. See if you can find the flaw in his logic just one sentence later."

The clip in question: Trump boasting about acing a cognitive test — and specifically shouting out his doctor, "Ronny Johnson." Only problem with that — his doctor was physician Ronny Jackson.

"Acing that cognitive test is a great point if only his doctor was named Ronny Johnson. And not actually named, Ronny Jackson. He got the guy's name wrong on his cognitive test!" Stewart said in disbelief.

He finished in classic Stweart fashion, ripping the Republican party for its seemingly never-ending faith in its fearless leader.

"The sad thing is under MAGA law, his name is now Ronny Johnson," said Stewart. "This is the way."

Watch: Jon Stewart issues blistering takedown of corporate exploitation of Pride Month

Daily Show host Jon Stewart slammed corporations Monday night for exploiting the "decades-long struggle of gay people for acceptance and equality."

The blistering takedown came during Stewart's opening segment, in which he blasted companies like Burger King, Skittles and Target for financially exploiting Pride Month.

"Remember when you were fired from that bank job after you were outed? Well, Burger King does," Stewart said to laughs, "with a burger that has two bottom buns!"

Stwart said the example was very much real — "not a funny make 'em up."

He then set his sights on candy giant Skittles.

"Scarred by conversion therapy? Skittles is releasing a colorless version of Skittles," Stewart said, again to laughs, "apparently not wanting to confuse gay people with competing rainbows."

He then showed an ad for Oreo, about a family "overcoming a father's deep conservative values." In the ad, a woman named Amy is introduced to her partner's family, including her partner's apparently disapproving father. At the end of the video, the father seems to have had a change of heart — painting a rainbow flag on their fence.

"Did I do it right?" the father asks.

An incredulous and bewildered Stewart can't help but ask, "What the f---?"

"The next time you waste an enormous amount of paint to apologize to your daughter for making her and her girlfriend walk on f---ing eggshells all f---ing weekend, not even saying anything, just standing there with your little glowering beard face, in the shadows ... you paint the fence and give her an Oreo?"

Stewart then launched into Target, which said it would scale back Pride Month merchandise this month.

"What? How will I learn to 'live, laugh, lesbian?'"

He then asks the difficult question, of why Target is "apparently less proud of pride this year," and plays a CNN clip which reports the retail giant has faced backlash over recent collections that celebrate LBTQ people.

"That's the burden corporations must bear," Stewart said. "They care almost too much about the human condition, often finding themselves in the crosshairs of ideologues and fundamentalists. But they stand by their values. Sometimes for a couple of months!"
