Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene declared MAGA dead on Thursday, and she laid much of the blame on President Donald Trump's efforts to keep the Jeffrey Epstein files under wraps.
Speaking at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin, the Georgia Republican traced her breakup with Trump to what she described as a top-down blockade of the Epstein investigation records, according to Daily Kos.
"What does the future look like for MAGA right now?" she said. "I think Trump has lied so much to us and betrayed us so incredibly, beyond any of my comprehension. I think MAGA is dead."
The audience cheered, HuffPost reported. Greene then described what she cast as a campaign run from the White House to bury the files.
"They had a massive hold on the resolution to release the Epstein files — that was because Donald Trump, 100%," she said. "We knew that if you're in the GOP conference, you knew it was coming directly from the top."
She went further, naming then-Attorney General Pam Bondi and Trump's top congressional allies. "He had a tight leash on Pam Bondi, this was not going to be released. He had a tight leash on Speaker [Mike] Johnson, Leader [John] Thune, these are not going to be released, shut it down."
Greene was one of four House Republicans who signed the discharge petition led by Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Democratic Rep. Ro Khanna to force a floor vote, NPR reported. She said signing it drew a personal call from Trump.
"He said, 'Marjorie, people you know will get hurt, my friends, people you know at Mar-a-Lago,'" Greene said. "And he's totally against releasing the Epstein files."
The House passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act 427-1 on Nov. 18, 2025, and Trump, reversing his opposition, signed it the next day. Greene announced her resignation days later, after Trump branded her a "traitor" and a "ranting lunatic." Her last day in Congress was Jan. 5, 2026. She has since accused Trump of covering up his ties to Epstein.
Greene told the Austin crowd the feud turned personal, saying Trump once texted her that she "deserved it" after her son received a death threat, the Texas Tribune reported. She called the broader MAGA movement a "cult" and said she now feels politically homeless.
Greene has floated launching a third party and has turned her fire on Trump's inner circle, including White House ally Laura Loomer.
