President Donald Trump took to social media early Tuesday to share private text messages from two world leaders, one of whom is seen in their message expressing confusion over Trump’s growing fixation on acquiring Greenland.
“I do not understand what you are doing on Greenland,” reads a message purportedly from French President Emmanuel Macron, shared by Trump on his social media platform Truth Social.
Trump has escalated threats in his effort for the United States to acquire Greenland, announcing a new slate of tariffs last Saturday against eight European nations who spoke out about his threats aimed at the country. He warned the levies would increase in June, and remain until “such a time as a deal is reached for the complete and total purchase of Greenland.”
Trump also shared a private text exchange between himself and Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO. Unlike Macron, Rutte didn’t express confusion over Trump’s fixation on Greenland, but rather, appeared supportive of it.
“I am committed to finding a way forward on Greenland,” reads the purported text message from Rutte to Trump. “Can’t wait to see you. Yours, Mark.”
“Thank you to Mark Rutte, the Secretary General of NATO!” Trump wrote in a social media post alongside an image of his private text exchange with Rutte.
Trump first floated the idea of the United States acquiring Greenland in 2019, but has ramped up those calls in recent months, insisting that the acquisition was necessary “from the standpoint of national security.”
