Trump terrified House Republicans 'jumping ship' will cause impeachment: report

President Donald Trump has already handed Democrats plenty of reasons to seek his impeachment if they take back the House in 2026, leading Trump allies to come up with a detailed plan to try to keep that from happening, Axios reported.

The Republican majority in the House currently rests on the slimmest of margins and, as reporter Alex Isenstadt wrote, "Midterm elections are historically tough for the party occupying the White House."

If the House flips after the 2026 midterms, history could repeat itself with a Democrat-controlled House immediately beginning investigations that could lead to impeachment for what they view as dramatic overreach, haphazard policies, and major ethical concerns.

"Already, some Democrats have signaled they want to investigate Trump's overhaul of the U.S. government, whether he manipulated markets and fostered insider trading with his tariff announcements, and whether he's helped Elon Musk secure deals for Starlink," Isenstadt wrote. "Then there's that $400 million jet from Qatar. Democrats and other critics say Trump violated the Constitution by accepting the gift."

The GOP is eyeing a five-point plan that could be the key to keeping Trump comfortably in office through the end of his term, according to the article.

First, Trump will try to prevent as many House Republicans as possible from leaving to run for Senate or their state's governorship. According to Isenstadt, "Trump's team is concerned" about lawmakers like Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY) and Rep. Bill Huizenga (R-MI) "jumping ship" for higher office.

Next, Trump plans to employ his $500 million war chest for ad buys and other campaigns to spread the word about the importance of keeping the House in Republican hands, the report said. And he'll do what he can to stop primary challengers from taking on established GOP lawmakers.

Since money speaks in politics, Trump allies plan to use Trump's charisma to raise "gobs more money" for the cause, Isenstadt wrote. They also plan to use that charisma to recruit and endorse new talent in swing states.

What Obama should have said

"I salute the efforts that House Democrats have made in reaching across the aisle to restore our Constitution, but I have repeatedly said that I would support a filibuster on any FISA bill which included retroactive immunity, and I will. I will work with Senate colleagues to ensure that the Justice Department has the opportunity to prosecute those who engaged in unconstitutional activity, and in my administration, I will ensure that the Justice Department takes that opportunity very seriously.
