House Speaker Mike Johnson is using the violent unrest in France to argue that a Democratic victory in next month’s midterm elections would threaten Americans’ freedoms and way of life.
The Louisiana Republican linked the demonstrations to immigration and attacked Democrats in a post on X, Fox News reported Monday.
“France is descending into chaos because they wanted OPEN BORDERS — just like the socialist Democrats in America,” Johnson wrote. “What we are witnessing is a chilling warning for all Americans of what happens if the radical Marxist insurgent left gets their way.”
The speaker portrayed the November elections as a fight with consequences extending far beyond control of Congress.
“America is not merely in a battle of political ideologies — it’s a battle for the preservation of our civilization, our freedoms, and our way of life,” he said.
“If Democrats take back control, it will be open borders and criminal illegals overrunning our country, many of whom want to destroy it.”
French officials have not cited immigration as a factor in the unrest, The Hill reported. The protests began in mid-September over teacher shortages and underfunded schools before expanding into strikes over inflation and the cost of living.
About half a million people took to the streets over the weekend as the demonstrations turned violent. More than 2,300 people were taken into custody, France’s justice minister said Monday, and nearly 1,000 security personnel were injured.
French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu blamed “ultra-left radical groups” for the violence.
Johnson isn’t alone in pinning the chaos on immigration. Vice President JD Vance wrote over the weekend that “Western liberals imported the third world into France and other countries in the name of diversity and compassion.” President Donald Trump weighed in Monday on Truth Social: “The migrants have taken over France. They must CLOSE THE BORDERS, FAST!”
