  • Buchanan offends Republican strategist: ‘Examine yourself’

    By David Edwards

Republican strategist Mike Paul accused Pat Buchanan of a personal attack while appearing on MSNBC’s Hardball Thursday. Paul had been explaining that recently defeated Republicans needed to be more inclusive as a Party.

Buchanan disagreed, “I would love to get all the young voters and African-American voters, if you tell me how to do it other than talk about a big tent.”

“I’m saying we need to examine ourselves first,” Paul explained.

“Why don’t you examine yourself?” snapped Buchanan.

While Paul accused Buchanan of a “personal attack,” he seemed too upset to remember Buchanan’s exact words. “You’ll have to look back at the transcript,” said Paul.

This video is from MSNBC’s Hardball, broadcast Nov. 13, 2008.

Look, I think Buchanan is out of line with 95% of what he says & I agree with Mike Paul - that Buchanan’s view is out-of-date, BUT, you guys are adressing the wrong point in this spot. What Buchanan said was, “get a candidate” and what Mike heard was “go to Canada.” I listened to the whole spot over and again, and it was NOT the “examine yourself” remark that was misheard by Mike Paul. It was the “get a candidate” remark. Again, Buchanan is a DINOSAUR as far as the party is concerned (Mike’s point about 1964), and I NEVER agree with him on anything - but this time you guys heard the wrong thing….

I saw this, and it isn’t the first time Buchanan has bullied, disrespected and condescended to an African American commentator on MSNBC. He told a female African American commentator to “Shut up” on Dan Abram’s old show. Rachel Maddow, also a guest commentator in that segment, admonished Pat on his obviously racist disrespect for the other commentator. It was astonishing.

I saw the exchange between Buchanan and Mike Paul tonight, and I sent Chris a MySpace message on it immediately after the 5 o’clock broadcast. I just watched it again on the 7 o’clock broadcast, and Mike Paul has every reason to call foul.

In light of the Republican party’s abysmal numbers in the presidential and congressional elections last week, Paul called for the party to do some soul-searching on the party’s failure to reach out to African Americans, Latinos, and Asians. Buchanan responded first by dismissing these groups with a stereotype — that they are all about wanting the government to “do-for” them. Then he turned it personal by telling Paul to “Examine yourself.”

It’s really time for MSNBC to divorce itself from the bigot that Pat Buchanan is.

Americans_United — I agree that Paul misheard Buchanan, but Patty-Patty-Buke-Puke was already deep in the bigoted mire.

The man is oblivious to the reality of African-American, Latino and Asian entrepreneurs and business-owners, who would be naturally pre-disposed to the traditional Republican policies of fiscal responsibility, low-taxation, and minimal regulation of markets.

The Republican Party *used to* be the party of equal opportunity — that everyone, regardless of race, color or creed, should have the right and ability to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and realize the American Dream. This is what Paul was trying to get at before Buchanan shouted him into stunned outrage.

I agree with you Schnitzie… I cannot tell you how many times I’ve written to various shows about Buchanan’s attitude. This DINOSAUR’s point of view is out-dated and racist. I just cannotunderstand why everyone lets him continue to talk. It’s time to get this man off the air !!! He goes unchecked on several shows & it just amazes me !!!

    5. Schnitzie Says:

Ahhhhh, so Americans_United, you won’t mind my just coming out and saying it:

MSNBC needs to get that Nazi-sympathizing jackass Buchanan off their network! Find some other token right-wing freak!
