  • Palin says her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant

    By David Edwards

Sarah PalinST. PAUL, Minnesota: The 17-year-old daughter of the Republican vice-presidential candidate, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, is pregnant, Palin said Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.

Bristol Palin, one of Palin’s five children with her husband, Todd, is about five months pregnant and is going to keep the child and marry the father, the Palins said in a statement released by the campaign of Senator John McCain.

Bristol Palin made the decision to keep the baby on her own, McCain aides said.

“We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us,” the Palins’statement said.

“Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support,” the Palins said.

They asked the media to respect the young couple’s privacy.

“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media, respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates,” the statement concluded.

Senior McCain campaign officials said that McCain knew of the pregnancy when he selected Palin last week as his vice presidential running mate, and that he had decided it did not disqualify the 44-year-old governor in any way.

In the short period since the pick was announced last Friday, Palin has helped to energize the Republican Party’s conservative base, giving the McCain camp fresh energy going into the campaign for the Nov. 4 election against Senator Barack Obama, the Democratic candidate.

McCain campaign officials said the news of the daughter’s pregnancy was being released to rebut what one aide called “mud-slinging and lies” circulating on liberal blog sites.

According to the rumors, Sarah Palin had faked a pregnancy and pretended to have given birth in May to her fifth child, a son named Trig who has Down syndrome. The rumor was that Trig was actually Bristol Palin’s child and that Sarah Palin was the grandmother.

A senior McCain campaign official said the McCain camp was appalled that these rumors had not only been spread around liberal blog sites but also were the subject of heightened interest from the mainstream news media.

“The despicable rumors that have been spread by liberal blogs, some even with Barack Obama’s name in them, is a real anchor around the Democratic ticket, pulling them down in the mud in a way that certainly juxtaposes themselves against their ‘campaign of change,”‘ a senior aide said.

Ok, she needs to withdraw. The fundamentalist / family first crowd cannot possibly think that a new mom with a special needs child AND a soon-to-be-new grandmother with an underage daughter shouldn’t make her family her first priority. How can she possibly devote her full attention to the Office of VP while she’s dealing with her needy family.

Oh my — the header says “Palin says her 17-year-old daughter is pregnant” and below the story, without a hint of irony, there’s an advert with a header “5 tips to get a flat stomach”.

Thanks a bunch - you’ve given me my smile for the day!

    3. sansu Says:

The first comment is typical obot mentality.

This is rich! Karma with the one-two punch. First Gustav creating the party that no one came to, and now the pregnant daughter from the hardcore religious right. I’ll bet they are wishing they had encouraged birth control now. What the Raw Story article doesn’t say is that the father is a senior aide to McCain (cnn.com). Does that mean a senior in high school or a retired older gentleman, perhaps around McCain’s age? I am LMAO.

    5. j-m Says:

Palin is lying! There are pictures on the Daily Kos showing her daughter pregnant in late 2007 (the baby of Sarah Palin supposingly being born in May 2008–with Palin not even showing a month before, and her staff in shock when she announced that she was pregnant). Something is fishy here. Either her daughter had a baby and she hid it saying it was hers (Sarah Palin’s), and when news got out she told her daughter, “you got to get pregnant again, and announce you are getting married to the father, so you can protect Momma’s V.P. bid”! If that is the case, that should be criminal.

    6. ScaryBob Says:

Either way, someone is lying, go figure, a Repugnican lying, no, wait, an evangelical Christian Wacko lying, and not following their faith! Go figure. Not shocking at all!!!

Suddenly I see a new V.P. pick in the wings.

Here’s the essence of the conversation and what we are actually choosing in November:

an ideology that benefits a few from the many demands fear and ignorance as its fuel

an ideology that encourages and provides education for personal responsibility in the hope that we will make good choices

You could argue either is risky, but I will always side with my ability to choose for myself. Elsewise, where is the point in being human?

    8. Unvarnishedtruth Says:

The stories about Gov. Palin over the weekend focused on her allegedly faking a pregnancy and presenting her grandson as her son to the world. The “straight-talk” response to the blogs would have been to distribute certified copies of the five month-old child’s birth certificate to the press, accompanied by a statement from the obgyn who delivered the baby.
Instead, Gov. Palin and the McCain press machine throws the 17 year-old daughter under the bus by outing her for being “about” five-months pregnant. So, how does this hasty press release disprove any of the questions/allegations about the parentage of the infant?
What kind of mom does this to her teenage daughter? Come on, the girl didn’t sign up to run for elective office, but the mom is releasing private details about her to the press!
One final point, what kind of parents, faced with two at-risk children in need of their Mom and Dad’s full-time attention, take on the all-consuming commitment of a national political campaign?
Gov. and Mr. Palin, please take care of your kids. They are way more important than politics.

    9. sir_ken_g Says:

Sex before marrige is a sin Ms Pilan. Cannot even manage your own daughter - clearly not fit to run….

    10. betteb Says:

j-m writes above: “Either her daughter had a baby and she hid it saying it was hers (Sarah Palin’s), and when news got out she told her daughter, “you got to get pregnant again, and announce you are getting married to the father, so you can protect Momma’s V.P. bid”!”

In all honesty, I don’t for one second believe the daughter’s pregnant. If she gave birth to that wee Downs Syndrome baby in early spring, it’d be impossible for her to be at a five month term now. So who actually had the kid? Pix of the governor a few weeks before “delivering” don’t convince me it was her. Women about to deliver their *fifth* kid almost always get … kind of really VERY large. So ….

My bet is this might turn out to be a ‘PR pregnancy’, designed to take media heat off the Governor’s run for the VP slot. The cynic in me will be watching for a “miscarriage” announcement in the next couple of months from the daughter. That’d be ‘problem solved’, right? Or maybe not. Whatever. Strange stuff happening up there in the land of the midnight sun.

    11. Horseradish Says:

I guess Governor Space Cadette forgot to tell her little girl about abstinence before marriage.

    12. rmberger61 Says:

If this is the result of conservative family values, lets agree that we should keep teaching about contraception.

    13. jateran Says:

I find it extremely unbelievable that Sarah Palin had a baby just months ago. Something smells very fishy here. I wish we had good journalists who did their job. BTW McBush did not know, otherwise he would had pushed harder for Joe LieberBush.

    14. jateran Says:

The party of family values eh?
What kind of mother boards a plane after her water broke? If that’s even true.
What kind of teachings went on in that home that a 17 y/o ended up pregnant? What kind of example a father’s DUI arrest is to a christian family?

    15. PhillipBrittain Says:

If Palin cannot keep her eye on her daughter or even instill the virtue of virginity until marriage in her, how do we expect her to run the country if something were to happen to McCain. After all, he has one foot in the grave and the other on a banana peel.

    16. JM1 Says:

Maybe the daughter is not pregnant, but the mother is again.

    17. JM1 Says:

If Obama had a little black teen age daughter, who was unmarried and pregnant, the right wing and FOX news would be having a field day.

    18. AllenAllen Says:

““The despicable rumors that have been spread by liberal blogs…a senior aide said.”
HEY! Who the hell has an AID that says shit like that.
1st: What the hell is wrong with being a liberal?
      and Second:
Why offend over HALF the US citizens who are Democrats with a bone head comment like that?
Who hires an aid like that?

    19. fedup Says:

OK. Has anyone checked that daughters B’date? I wonder if she was pregnant when she was 16 y/o… Statutory rape comes to mind…
In some states, she has to be 18 or it is considered statutory rape…

    20. fedup Says:

The idea of a ‘miscarriage’ happening in the near future has entered my mind, too.
However, what kind of mother/family would put out such a vicious rumor (being +-5 months preggers) about her teen daughter, if it was not true?

    21. karen Says:

I am confident that the next announcement about Bristol will be the tragic miscarriage brought on by the stress of liberal bloggers. (outside chance that it is baby number 2, and she is really 3 or 4 months pregnant).

Here is a fairytale for our times:

    22. Terrible Says:

Of course the daughter is pregnant. Her mother is one of those radical religous right anti-American nuts that think ‘abstinance’ is a form of birth control.

    23. sjk Says:

I can’t believe how many perfect people there are out there! You have got to be kidding me! Sure she stands up for Pro-Life does that mean her life is absolutely perfect? Get off your high horses and take a look at your self in the mirror. Aint so pretty is it?

    24. j-m Says:

Some reports in Alaska say she is 16. Isn’t being under the age considered a minor. If Levi Johnson (who calls himself a fuking redneck) is 18, isn’t that statutory rape? Where are the family values here? Just like I said the mcsameasbush-cain camp would do, scream sexism at those who oppose Palin. Come on Hillary, Michelle and Jill, get on the wagon and crush these sexism accusers!

    25. xrepublican Says:

So she raised 5 kids and one of them is pregnant and under age. Is this republiCON family values? ? Perhaps Sarah should have spent more time with her children than with the political hacks that run Alaska.

    26. Herodotus Says:

Caribou Barbie (Sarah Palin) is lying.

“The 17-year-old daughter of the Republican vice-presidential candidate, Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, is pregnant, Palin said Monday in an announcement intended to knock down rumors by liberal bloggers that Palin faked her own pregnancy to cover up for her child.”

Bloggers this weekend wanted to see photos of Sarah in the hospital, holding her new baby. *Every* mother in the U.S. has those. Or show the baby’s birth certificate. Good family friend Dr. Cathy Baldwin-Johnson, who allegedly delivered Sarah’s baby April 18th, has talked to an Anchorage Daily News reporter for two quotes, but nothing yet that could get her in trouble (oh, by the by, Sarah nominated Dr. Baldwin-Johnson for 2002 Physician of the Year award, and won it with her help. They are very close). Faking a Birth Certificate is big trouble.

So, family photo or birth certificate. *EVERY* mother has those two.

But *NO*. The McCain campaign thought the way to ‘knock down despicable rumors’ is to drag the unwed, underage daughter into the mud. Yeah, lets announce Bristol was *pregnant* already when Mom had Trig.

Pronounce your way out of a lie, with a bigger lie. You know Karl Rove was consulted on this bombshell. In for a pound, in for a kilogram.

Bristol is pregnant ‘about 5 months’. Sure. How convenient. And as people have said, a ‘miscarriage’ is definitely in the future. *AFTER* the election. How convenient. (Or maybe before the election, then blame it on Democrat bloggers…) In the end, they hope Sarah is VP, Bristol is married to f’in redneck, and they raise Trig because of the tragic loss of little Formica Velveeta Snowmobile Palin.

And for those who think *one photo* proves Sarah Palin was pregnant in March 2008:
      http://www.insensitivefather.com/images/38-junior.jpg

    27. fedup Says:

Well, now Levi J. is coming to the repukelican convention. He and Bristol are said to marry later this year… Talking about classical shotgun wedding, and in front of the whole world!
On his own page, he claims to be a redneck, and not to want babies (yet). Also, the girl shown with him is DEFINITELY not Bristol… Talking about f***ing up young peoples’ lives!

    28. fedup Says:

Oh… someone asked ‘what kind of mother would board a plane after her water broke?’
DEFINITELY NOT one who has had four kids before! With each birth, the process goes faster, and NO AIRLINE would let a highly pregnant woman fly! Too much liability! Also, supposedly her waters broke, she took a flight that took 11 hours, and then drove herself for 45 minutes to a little town with no facilities to care for premies? Yeah, right! Anyone believes any of these fairytales: I have a bridge to nowhere to sell to you! Cheap!

Aren’t there any pictures around of Palin from earlier this year? How about that convention where supposedly her waters broke?
