CNN: Ecstasy used to treat PTSD
By David EdwardsCNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta reported that a Georgia woman has used ecstasy to treat her post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Gail Westerfield has had depression going back to a childhood assault and rape later in life. She was given ecstasy as part of a pilot study being done by Dr. Michael Mitheofer.
Westerfield’s symptoms have disappeared since being treated with the drug. Ecstasy is the street name for MDMA. The drug temporarily floods the brain with serotonin, a chemical which is vital to emotional well-being.
