  • Obama mentions ‘Grand Theft Auto’ in comments about media influence on children

    By David Edwards

At a campaign stop in Indianapolis, Democratic presidential frontrunner Sen. Barack Obama referenced the new ‘Grand Theft Auto’ video game as an example of media entertainment’s growing influence on American children.

“This video game … isn’t intended for kids, I understand… [but] those video games are raising our kids,” said Obama.

“It just reminded me [about] video culture, TV culture,” he continued. “Across the board, [kids are] spending a huge amount of time not on their studies, but on entertainment.

“Part of our job is gonna have to be to inspire the entire country to say, ‘How are we giving our kids a thirst for knowledge?’”

I’m gonna have to call foul here. He doesn’t “call out” GTA4 he references it when talking about how parents are letting kids spend too much time playing games and watching TV and not putting an emphasis on education.

    2. Hillary4Life Says:

Barack Obama being against video games will not resonate well with young voters. The more and more we find out about this mystery candidate the more we see how unelectable he truly is.

    3. JCinDE Says:

Hillary4Life you’d do well to actually watch the video rather than comment based on the misleading title. He’s not against video games. He’s promoting parental involvement.

[...] Gamepolitics also has a report of Barack Obama expressing his opinions on Grand Theft Auto. He actually comes across as a reasoned individual, but I will leave that up to you for decisions. The story and video can be found here. [...]

Yay! Much better title, RawStory! :)

I respect the way he answered that question. And I agree, the entire fault of education does not rest with the government and the schools.

You’ve got to love people like Hillary4Life. I’ll say this for you H4L, you’re definitely loyal to the spirit of your chosen candidate’s campaign. Comments like yours accurately reflect the simple-minded desperation of Clinton’s campaign. The reasoning is great…Obama no like video games, so young people no like Obama, ugh, ugh…That’s awesome.

Oh, and the part about him being a “mystery candidate” is pretty neat, too. You know what’s a mystery to me, H4L? I wonder why Hillary Clinton supports a gas tax cut that would cost our infrastructure fund $9 billion dollars, while saving individual families a MAXIMUM of $100 for the ENTIRE summer. THAT’S a mystery to me. Oh, by the way, even though she’s supposedly “ready to act now”, it’s truly mysterious that neither Clinton nor John McCain have proposed any law that would bolster their great ideas about relieving high gas prices. So much for that “Commander-in Chief Threshold”, huh?

    8. Resse Says:

Its funny because Hillary Clinton has already started a war with the Video Game industry, including GTA. http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=051129223726.dqn74ka0&show_article=1

Nothing that Obama said implied that he was against it… just that we should pay more attention to what our kids focuses lie. Education should always be first over playing GTA IV.

    9. Politics and Banning of GTA IV « uniting the xbox 360 community Says:

[...] and Banning of GTA IV There’s been a lot of talk and controversy over GTA IV. Obama gave some words about it saying “This video game … isn’t intended for kids, I [...]
