I guess they didn’t teach about the civil war when you children went to high school. The South separated from the Union because of Lincoln’s protectionist tariffs that he placed on the South. If Lincoln was so anti-slavery, why did he wait until the middle of the war to free them?
So I guess you people don’t think the South had the right to separate, which of course would make the Declaration of Independence a document of hipocracy. After all, we can’t have people running around separating themselves from tyrants now can we. You people have no clue.

From Ron Paul’s Newsletter:

Indeed, it is shocking to consider the uniformity of opinion among blacks in this country. Opinion polls consistently show that only about 5% of blacks have sensible political opinions, i.e. support the free market, individual liberty, and the end of welfare and affirmative action…. Given the inefficiencies of what D.C. laughingly calls the “criminal justice system,” I think we can safely assume that 95% of the black males in that city are semi-criminal or entirely criminal.
If similar in-depth studies were conducted in other major cities, who doubts that similar results would be produced? We are constantly told that it is evil to be afraid of black men, but it is hardly irrational. Black men commit murders, rapes, robberies, muggings, and burglaries all out of proportion to their numbers.

It’s just history people, do your research and decide for yourself who is right
from wikipedia ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abraham_lincoln )
… Lincoln supported the pending Corwin Amendment to the Constitution, which had already passed Congress. This amendment, which explicitly protected slavery in those states in which it existed …
… The slave states of Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland, and Delaware did not secede, and Lincoln urgently negotiated with state leaders there, promising not to interfere with slavery. …
… My paramount object in this struggle is to save the Union, and is not either to save or to destroy slavery. If I could save the Union without freeing any slave I would do it, and if I could save it by freeing all the slaves I would do it; and if I could save it by freeing some and leaving others alone I would also do that. …

The South did not secede from the Union just because of slavery. Think about it. Less than 20% of southerners were slave-owners at the time. Why would this 80%+ percent care about slavery one way or the other? The South’s worry about Lincoln was that he would undermine state rights and individuality, not slavery per se.
As mentioned in other comments, Lincoln did not personally care particularly about slavery in one way or the other. He’s talked about the supremacy of white people, and he did negotiate with individual states.
In the American education system, we learn to deify this past presidents such as Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Wilson. In our eyes, these guys can do no wrong. As we grow up, these feelings are strengthened especially with the proliferation of mass media and the information age, where the amount of information allows us to critique present leaders’ constant moves. We compare our leaders to leaders of the past, asking why couldn’t it be like the old days? These old heroes are not who they seem on the surface.

This is pretty funny when so many people write in and tell educated people just how uneducated they are.

wow – so, this is American journalism? man, no wonder you guys are in such a mess; you all look like fools outside America. Bush, your representative, just had his most idiotic moments of 07 on Japanese TV the other night – child: “what’s the white house like?” bush: “white…” – what an absolute w*nker. I can’t believe you let idiots like this be your bridge for information during such an important period in American history…

Wow, what a rude, smug, arrogant, ignorant and disrespectful punk David Shuster is. He said he would let Ron Paul answer his questions, but kept interrupting him. David Shuster, why don’t you shut up and let Ron Paul speak? He has many useful things to say, you might actually learn something, despite your being an insufferable jackass.
“as revered as Abraham Lincoln”? Only because we were fed lies in the public schools.

As an American history major with a minor in economics my focus was on the American Revolution and the Civil War. I have studied many different texts regarding these two historical events. Some texts are contridictory as to the actual events, but when you analyse them together with other supporting documentation you will find that Dr. Ron Paul is absolutely correct.
Most people will look at slavery from a moral perspective, and agree that it is immoral, however it’s almost never analyzed from an economic perspective. You will find that when analyzed economically, human slavery just doesn’t work.
The south had far less economic resources than the industrialized north did, very few southerners could maintain a slave business because they would go broke trying. The costs associated with human slavery is far greater than maintaining a herd of cattle and the relative yield is far less.
The wealthy northeners were actually in a much better economic position to maintain slaves than the southerners. In fact notherners were very much involved in the slave business, which is very seldom talked about or even realized by people, especially mindless numbskulls like David Shuster and his minions.
Take from me, Ron Paul spanked the three stooges bigtime.

Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests upon the great truth, that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery — subordination to the superior race — is his natural and normal condition. [Applause.] This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth.
A. Stephens
V.P. of the CSA
It is amazing.
I suggest you Ron Paul clowns actually read the original documents on secession. They are quite clear that the South left to protect slavery.
For example, Mississippi starts with, “Our cause is throughly identified with slavery.”
Plus,
If Paul read real history instead of neo-Confederate bunk, he would see that Lincoln offered money to free slaves in March of 1862. Even Delaware with very few slaves rejected this.
Yet in neo-Confederate history fantasy-land either this never happened or it is not the South’s fault.
BTW,
The South could have freed the slaves at any time through their state legistlatures. They were the only people in 1861 who had that power, not Lincoln.
Of course they didn’t.
But hey it is Lincoln’s fault, right?

Madspartan, for a history major I think you must have slept through your classes. First, the south was in the COTTON business, not cattle. Cotton was tremendously labor intensive all season long. But esp during picking. You can’t compare growing cotton and raising cattle. Slavery was very profitable in the cotton business where unpaid help spent sun-up to sundown in the fields.
One more thing. If you want to be able to recognize
Second, the north was industrialized, which is why the north enjoyed more widespread wealth. Slavery was not used in the factories, and when it was used it was on the farms. Not as many farms, hence far fewer slaves. BTW, the north doesn’t have the climate to grow cotton so slavery was far less practical.
Third, slavery is immoral and Abe knew it. His determination to save the union no matter what included his view of ending slavery after the union was saved.
RP was on Meet the Press 2 weeks ago. Russert asked him how much it would cost to shut down the IRS. Dr. Paul responded “A lot.” I think we should all get on the band wagon of a man who has such complete recall of the facts, don’t you? HE’S NOT QUALIFIED!!! Better do a little thinking about your support of the doctor. Or, have aqnother glass of Kool-aid.
