Los Angeles- The five nominees for best picture:
Babel - A drama of international suffering, Babel examines a chain
of events that begins with a shooting in the Moroccan desert. The
overlapping story lines encapsulate the lives of a US tourist couple
(Cate Blanchett and Brad Pitt), two Moroccan shepherd boys, a nanny
crossing illegally into Mexico with two US children, and a deaf-mute
Japanese girl whose father is being sought by the police. The drama
takes place in four countries and five languages using a multilingual
cast comprised largely of non-actors.
---
Little Miss Sunshine - A dark comedy that follows a dysfunctional
family taking a road trip in an old VW bus to get their precocious
daughter to a children's talent show. Predictably, things don't go
too well when you place fighting spouses, a drug addicted
grandfather, a suicidal uncle and a disgruntled teenager in the
sputtering vehicle for the cross-country trip.
---
Letters from Iwo Jima - A Japanese-language movie made by Clint
Eastwood, widely seen as America's greatest director. The film is a
sensitive look at the lives and feelings of doomed Japanese troops
and their commander, who defend the island against US forces in one
of the most famous battles of WWII.
---
The Departed - Martin Scorsese's nail-biting examination of the
personal struggles and torn loyalties that develop in an undercover
battle between the Irish Mafia and the police in Boston. The movie
centres on a mafia mole in the police department and an undercover
cop at the pinnacle of the local mob in a race to uncover their
adversaries before being exposed themselves.
---
The Queen - A warts-and-all look at the inner crisis in the
British royal family following the death of Princess Diana. The movie
features Helen Mirren as the British monarch, torn between her desire
for dignified private mourning and the demands of her subjects for a
public outpouring of grief.
