The US ambassador in Beijing asked the Chinese government on Friday to show "restraint" in Tibet and not to resort to force, the US State Department said.

Ambassador Clark Randt spoke to senior-level Chinese officials and "urged the Chinese government to act with restraint," State Department spokesman Sean McCormack told reporters.

The spokesman echoed White House calls to respect Tibetan culture and multi-ethnicity in Chinese society.

He also recalled that Washington has "consistently urged the Chinese government to engage in a dialogue with the Dalai Lama," the Tibetan spiritual leader.

McCormack said there were no US diplomats in Tibet, but said the US embassy in Beijing and the consulate in Chengdu were "monitoring the situation."
