Screen star and former senator Fred Thompson will make his long-awaited announcement that he is jumping into the 2008 Republican presidential race on September 6.
Thompson's political director Randy Enwright told Thompson supporters in a conference call Thursday that his boss would jump into the fray with a web video announcement, a campaign source said.
The star of internationally syndicated television drama "Law & Order" will then launch a tour of crucial early voting states in the Republican nominating race, in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, the source said.
He will return to his home state of Tennessee on September 15, the source said.
