US actor Eddie Murphy has admitted he fathered a child with Spice Girls singer Melanie Brown, who had filed a paternity suit against the comedian, People magazine reported Saturday.

While "Beverly Hills Cop" star Murphy said he has paid child support for four-month-old Angel Iris Murphy Brown, he denied Brown's claim that the two had planned to have the child.

People, citing a statement released by his representatives, said Murphy "acknowledges paternity of the child Angel, and has paid child support to Ms. Brown as well as covering the expenses of her pregnancy."

"Mr. Murphy and Ms. Brown dated very briefly and never made any plans of ANY sort," the statement said.

Brown, the 32-year-old Spice Girl known as Mel B and Scary Spice, said at a press conference Wednesday that her daughter "will always know that she was planned and wanted by both of us."

Brown's attorney, Gloria Allred, said a paternity test proved that Murphy, 46, is the father.

In 2005, Murphy divorced his wife Nicole Mitchell Murphy, the mother of his five children.

The star of "Dreamgirls," "Beverly Hills Cop" and "The Nutty Professor" is currently engaged to producer Tracey Edmonds, according to US media reports.

Brown is divorced and has an eight year-old girl.

The Spice Girls, a British pop group that sold 50 million records worldwide in the 1990s, are reuniting for a world tour in December and January.
