| | Sources: Kaine to be new DNC chairman
Virginia Governor Tim Kaine is going to replace former Vermont Gov. Howard Dean as the new chairman of the Democratic National Committee, several sources said Sunday.
Kaine will take on the post full-time in 2010 after he finishes his final term as governor, according to the Washington Post. There has been no comment thus far from Obama transition aides nor aides for Gov. Kaine.
Kaine, the former mayor of Richmond, was a lawyer representing minorities and the disabled in housing cases, a law professor at the University of Richmond and a missionary in Honduras before becoming Virginia's Lieutenant Governor under Mark Warner in 2001. Kaine's gubernatorial run in 2005 garnered him votes from traditionally Republican parts of the state, surpassing even the returns from his predecessor. He was also tapped to give the Democratic response to President Bush's 2006 State of the Union address.
Kaine's public support for fellow Harvard Law graduate and then-Senator Obama's presidential run began in February 2007. He was thought to be on the short list for Obama's running mate, alongside then-Senator Joseph Biden (D-DE) and Senator Evan Bayh (D-IN) before the final decision was announced last August.
