| | Siegelman attorney asks Attorney General Holder to overturn conviction
Former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman's attorney has sent a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder, requesting that a federal judge throw out Siegelman's bribery and corruption conviction on the grounds that the prosecution was filled with misconduct.
Vance Kilborn's four-page letter asks Holder to treat Siegelman the same way he treated former Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska, whose corruption conviction was thrown out on Wednesday because prosecutors had withheld evidence from the defense team during his trial.
In an interview with TPMMuckraker on Wednesday, Siegelman brought up the Stevens decision, saying, "There seems to be substantial evidence of prosecutorial and other misconduct in my case, that would dwarf the allegations in the Stevens case. ... "I hope that [Holder] will take a look at some of the other cases that are buried on his desk."
Siegelman is currently waiting for an appeals court to decide whether to consider his case. A three-judge panel last month rejected his appeal on the narrower issue of juror misconduct.
