DENVER -- Just as things seemed to be wrapping up Wednesday night, Barack Obama made an unscheduled appearance on stage at the Democratic National Convention to praise his vice presidential nominee and former rival while thanking the assembled delegates who had formally nominated him earlier in the day.

"I want everybody to now understand why I am so proud to have Joe Biden and Jill Biden and Beau Biden and Mama Biden and the whole Biden family on this journey with me to take America back," Obama said, emerging on stage after Biden's speech in which the vice presidential nominee spoke fondly of his mother and family.

Obama's appearance had been unscheduled, but rumors circulated around Denver earlier Wednesday that he would appear.

In his brief remarks, Obama also praised former President Bill Clinton, who spoke earlier in the evening. There had been reports that relations between the two remained chilly since the primary; perhaps the shout-out was an attempt to warm them.

"Just in case you were wondering," Obama said, "I think Bill Clinton reminded us what it's like when you've got a president who puts people first."

Obama also said Hillary Clinton, his former rival, "rocked the house" in her well received Tuesday night speech.

Thursday night will see Obama's full acceptance speech before nearly 80,000 supporters at a football stadium about a mile from the main convention site.

"I want to make sure that everybody who wants to come can join in the party and join in the effort to take America back," he said.
