| | Stewart: Palin to 'freak out' terrorists with 'no blinking' plan
Returning to The Daily Show after a week's vacation, Jon Stewart could only quickly summarize the many scandals that have arisen around Republican vice-presidential nominee Sarah Palin over the last 10 days.
He focused instead on her interview with ABC's Charlie Gibson, where in a now-notorious interchange, Gibson asked "Do you agree with the Bush Doctrine?" and Palin, failing to recognize the term, replied, "In what respect, Charlie?"
"Her foreign policy experience consists of being able to see Russia from an island in Alaska and a refueling layover in Ireland," Stewart noted. "Now, that might give some people who are asked to be vice president pause."
"I answered him 'yes,'" Palin told Gibson of her response to McCain's offer of the nomination, "because I have the confidence in that readiness and knowing that you can't blink, you have to be wired in a way of being so committed to the mission ... you can't blink. So I didn't blink then, even, when asked to run as his running-mate."
"Total certainty would be such a refreshing change of pace in the White House," Stewart commented ironically.
"In order to stop Islamic extremists," Palin told Gibson, "we must do whatever it takes, and we must not blink."
"Yeah!" yelled Stewart. We're going to freak out them terrorists with our no blinking! ... She really is bringing a fresh, new idea to this presidential season."
Stewart then launched into a series of clips of speeches by President George W. Bush during the weeks immediately preceding the invasion of Iraq.
On March 15, 2002, Bush stated, "This mighty nation will not blink" On March 13, he said, "I can assure you, I am not going to blink." On February 11, he proclaimed, "Either we defend freedom ... or we blink. And if we blink, the rest of the world will blink as well."
"Am I the only one who believes that blinking is actually healthy?" wondered Stewart. "I feel it clears out irritants of the eye."
