| | Daily Show spoofs GOP attacks in 'mythical' Obama bio
He is 'The One.' He 'completes us.' Every time he speaks, 'an angel has an orgasm.' He is Sen. Barack Obama, and The Daily Show has his 'true' life's story.
In a spoof segment aired Thursday night, Jon Stewart excused the show's lack of coverage of Sen. Obama's nomination acceptance speech, saying the video was 'embargoed' until Friday. In reality, The Daily Show is taped well in advance of the news it sometimes reports on, and the writers often have to come up with unusually creative ways to get close to a future story.
In this case, The Daily Show secured a 'stirring' video biography of the Democratic presidential nominee. The segment was a knock on rumors perpetrated against the Democrat by the GOP.
As the sun rises over an animated Serengeti, familiar vocals from Disney's film The Lion King trumpet. Wild creatures raise their heads, and Sen. Ted Kennedy proclaims that "change is in the air." An elephant, carrying birds on its tusks, marches onward, and thousands of people charge into a suburb street. "He is The One," says Oprah.
As shoppers charge through a retail store, zebras bow down, a melon is split in front of the sun, and the newborn lion cub, bearing Sen. Obama's face, is presented for all the creatures to adore. Showing photos of Obama's parents and childhood, the montage joked, "he was black, and white; Christian, and Muslim; land mammal, and sea creature."
"By the time he was 15, by his own account, he was uniting an astonishing 31 flavors of ice cream," said the narrator, as newspaper clippings of Obama, speaking of his first job at a Baskin Robins, flashed on the screen. Underlying Obama's words was video of a dog licking a cat, Rocky embracing Apolo Creed, and Pluto pushing Popeye on a swing.
"We are the ones we have been waiting for," contended Obama.
"I don't even know what that means," said the narrator. "But holy s**tballs, I'm feeling it!"
