Clinton all but cedes 'Potomac Primary' to Obama Hillary Clinton may have made the Washington beltway her home for the past 16 years. But it appears that newer resident Barack Obama is going to run away with votes in the three Washington, DC-area election contests today. And the Clinton team is doing its best to keep the Obama campaign from declaring an air of inevitability by shifting attention to other states while voters headed to the polls in Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.
Fox News reported on air this morning that a planned Clinton event had been cancelled in Washington, DC. Later, the network reported, the campaign said it had never issued an "official advisory" of the DC event, meaning that the appearance had never been conclusively scheduled.
Still, that Clinton skipped DC-area campaigning while Sen. Obama continued to pound the pavement in the city hinted that her campaign was shifting its priorities away from the current day where it did not expect much in the way of good news.
Polls would seem to confirm that Obama will win the Tuesday primaries handily. While pundits have suggested Clinton had a fighting chance in Virginia, Obama remained ahead of Clinton by 17 points in a poll released today by ARG, confirming a clear trend in the polls.
Signs of Clinton shifting the discussion away from the 'Potomac Primaries' were evident in a commercial she started running in Wisconsin. The ad encouraged voters to come out on Feb. 19 and vote for Clinton based on her health care proposal, an area where she has attempted to distinguish herself from Sen. Obama. Her campaign's communications director further emphasized in an official blog post that Clinton's eyes were set on the delegate-rich states of Ohio and Texas by pointing to planned events in the states and forthcoming ads. Clinton will also be addressing a rally in El Paso, TX tonight.
But while Obama is set to win big on Tuesday night, the senator will not be taking a victory lap in the area. Instead, Obama will visit the University of Wisconsin in Madison where he is hoping to add another victory next week.
