When President Bill Clinton appeared on Late Night with David Letterman on Monday, he was lavish in his praise for his wife, Senator Hillary Clinton, and also spoke well of both Joe Biden and John McCain. But as succeeding guest Chris Rock noted, Clinton appeared oddly reluctant to do more than barely mention the name of his party's current standard-bearer, Barack Obama.

Coming on directly after Clinton, comedian Chris Rock immediately noted, "Is that me, or he didn't want to say the name Barack Obama? ... He went through everything he could do, 'Well, like Hillary would want to do in the economy.'"

"Hillary ain't running!" Rock exclaimed as the audience applauded. "What the hell? ... I love Hillary but, you know, she lost. ... She got a lot of votes, she lost. ... It's not sexism the reason she lost. She lost to a black guy nobody heard of! She didn't lose to the Power!"

Rock was referring in particular to Clinton's response to a question about the current economic crisis, where he stated, "I think we're getting this thing straightened out financially, but the point is, we're still going to have real problems unless we do what Hillary and others have said. ... Hillary has said for over a year now, we ought to have a moratorium on these home mortgage foreclosures."

When asked about Joe Biden's remark that Hillary "might have been a better pick" for vice president than he was, Clinton replied, "I think he was telling what he honestly believed. Basically, he thought she'd be great, he was selected, let's make the best of this and win this election. ... I don't think he meant it in any kind of a cute way. ... He and Hillary are friends."

Clinton also spoke well of McCain, saying, "One of the things that I like about him -- and I think Americans like about him -- is that he is an intuitive politician. And I think he instinctively thought that [Sarah Palin] would help him. ... His big cross to bear in this election is that this is not a very good year to be a Republican. ... It's significantly worse for average people than it was in 1992 when I was elected on the economy."

Rock concluded his own segement with some far more skeptical remarks on Palin. "Have you been to Alaska?" he asked. "It's like the Road Warrior with snow. It's crazy up there, man. ... And she's shooting mooses ... holding a dead, bloody moose. Michael Vick's like, 'Why am I in jail?'"
