Kurtz: Widely ridiculed op-ed had at least one big fan in White House
Despite being ridiculed for his Washington Post op-ed piece "Why Bush Will Be a Winner", neo-conservative pundit Bill Kristol has at least one big fan left, President George W. Bush. In his column, Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz, reports that upon reading Kristol's optimistic prognostications on his legacy Bush recommended it for his entire staff.
Kristol is the focus of Kurtz's column, and he brings us news that despite the "the highly personal attacks" he faces for his continued advocacy of the disastrous policy he helped create from nuts to bolts, Kristol still maintains a, "genial, professorial demeanor."
"I've been pretty consistent, pretty upfront and straightforward about my views," Kristol says. "I had the same views when they were reasonably popular as I do now when they're unpopular. It would really be pathetic to adjust one's analysis based on public opinion."
Kristol claims that it has been terribly frustrating for him the past few years as he, "was defending a war whose strategy I really disapproved of. I felt an obligation not to jump ship because I thought jumping ship would be a worse outcome."
A generous Kristol also muses, "obviously I wish the war had gone better, but I'm not going to say something I don't believe to make my critics happier." Perhaps he can ascertain another way to make the war "go better" when he visits Iraq for the first time ever this week.
