Fox heralds Bush as World Series hero

A sentimental montage broadcast by Fox as part of its World Series coverage included President Bush’s opening pitch during game three of the 2001 World Series -- a month and a half after the Sept. 11 attacks -- as one of the greatest moments in baseball championship history.

The Fox montage, which placed the president’s ceremonial throw alongside some of the sport’s most celebrated events -- including Babe Ruth and his immortal 1932 “called shot” home run -- used actors posing as firemen to set the scene:

“The president’s at Yankee Stadium,” one fireman says as he watches television footage of Bush striding to the pitcher’s mound. “He’s in our uniform.”

“A strike!” another calls out as Bush throws the ball to home plate.

According to coverage at the time by Sports Illustrated, "New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, an ardent Yankees fan, and Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., sat in a box next to the dugout. Bush's appearance 'shows we're not afraid, we're undeterred and that life is moving on the way it should,' Giuliani told a reporter."

Yankees fan Giuliani, who swore just a few months ago that he would never root for another team, even to win the presidency, declared last week that he is supporting the Red Sox in the current World Series,
