Fox News fetes legacy-conscious Bush in one hour program  Over the weekend, Fox News aired "Fighting to the Finish," an insider look at President Bush as he begins his final year in office and prepares to give his last State of the Union address. The news feature follows Bush at the White House, in travel, and sits with him for lengthy interviews at his ranch in Crawford, Texas.
Fox's documentary presented Bush with an opportunity to reflect on what his legacy would be. He frequently invoked President Abraham Lincoln in the course of the discussion.
"I suspect Abraham Lincoln's approval rating wouldn't have been very good during the Civil War," the President said when asked which presidents inspire him. "600,000 people died. And yet Abraham Lincoln never lost sight of the moral truth that all men are created equal under God."
Bush also reflects on the criticism Lincoln received for the Gettysburg Address at the time it was given and applied it to his presidency.
"In terms of how I've done, history takes awhile to figure it out," he told Fox News' Brett Baird.
President Bush also discussed the failure until now to capture Osama Bin Laden.
"He'll be gotten by a president," Bush tersely said when asked whether or not the United States would ever catch him.
After acknowleding that he understands the need for, "closure for those who suffered under the attacks," he seemed to suggest that Bin Laden was in hiding was enough of an accomplishment.
"He's in hiding, he's not out there leading any parades," the President said.
He was also dismissive of anyone saying he wasn't focused on catching Bin Laden.
"They don't know what they're talking about," he quipped.
The president also took up the subject of how he would leave Iraq. After saying that victory in the country would be "gradual," Bush said the next president would manage the endgame.
"I think when I get out of here, I will have put Iraq in a position so that my successor, whoever that is, will be able to deal with the situation on the ground there, and I believe will understand the strategic consequences of the emergence of this free society," he argued.
As for the coming presidential election, Bush remained mum on which GOP candidate he backed, but defined the role he would like to play for the Republican Party.
"I will gracefully exit the stage at the proper time," he said. "I suspect that our candidate will want me to help, and if they do, I'm in, and if not, I'll continue bolstering the party."
