Obama wins as Democratic hopefuls vie in Take Back America straw poll
Senator Barack Obama won a straw poll conducted at the 2007 Take Back America conference in Washington, DC. The poll was carried out by the political strategy firm Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research and sponsored by the online news site The Politico. Obama received 29% of the 720 votes. Former North Carolina Senator John Edwards finished second with 26% support. Senator Hillary Clinton of New York wound up third with 17% in spite of her traditional front runner status in most national polls.
The poll did not include former Vice President Al Gore, and 8% of the respondents wrote his name in, putting him just behind New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson who received 9% of the tally.
Rep. Dennis Kucinich received 5% support, and former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel was given 1% of the votes. Senators Chris Dodd and Joseph Biden also approximately tied Gravel at 1% of the votes.
While Clinton came in third, 25% of respondents said they were 'Much More Likely' to vote for her after hearing her speak in the conference. However, 37% said they were 'Much More Likely' to vote for Obama, along with 32% for Edwards and 26% for Richardson, suggesting Clinton had work to do if she wanted to bring the conference's activists in step behind her campaign.
