"The race for the White House has entered its final crucial 16 months," said Jon Stewart on Wednesday's Daily Show. "And if you're still somehow undecided, maybe you're not judging by the right criteria."

After playing a series of clips of news hosts discussing candidates' "clothing decisions," Stewart asked, "Why so much focus on what is literally style over substance?" before turning to "resident expert" John Hodgman.

"Whether you like it or not, we live in the age of television," said Hodgman. "In fact, we've had tv for quite some time now. The year was 1960. Man had not yet pretended to walk on the moon and milk was less expensive than it is now. A young John Kennedy went on television to show that if you're stylish and handsome enough, voters are willing to overlook your hopeless idealism."

Hodgman then turned his attention to the benighted times before mass media. "America had a series of disastrous presidents with increasingly hideous beards," he stated.

"I don't want to say anything, but you appeared to include Lincoln in your list of mistakes," objected Stewart.

"He had a beard," retorted Hodgman. "Soup would stain his whiskers for weeks. ... His cabinet ... would spend hours grooming him, like a chimpanzee."
