Hong Kong- A Hong Kong taxi driver was stabbed to death by a young passenger in an apparent robbery in the early hours of Thursday morning. The 57-year-old was heard screaming for help and found suffering from face, hand and chest injuries after being repeatedly stabbed by the passenger.
He was rushed to hospital in a critical condition but died of massive blood loss and multiple injuries within hours of being admitted, police said.
A major manhunt was under way Thursday for a blood-splattered man in his 20s seen fleeing the scene after the incident which took place at around 3:30 a.m. in Hong Kong's Shamshuipo district.
The killer is believed to have boarded the taxi as a passenger and then used a fruit knife in an attempt to rob the driver of his night's takings.
Violent crime is rare in Hong Kong. Knife attacks are usually confined to disputes between the city's notorious triad gang members who run extortion, prostitution and drug rackets.
