Taiwan science park's exports grow 9.5 per cent annually

Taipei- Taiwan's Hsinchu Science-Based Park has enjoyed an average annual 9.5 per cent export growth in the past 10 years thanks to global recovery which has boosted the demand for high-tech products, the government said on Tuesday. From 1995 to 2005, exports from the Hsinchu Science-Based Park have risen from 199 billion Taiwan dollars (6 billion US dollars) to 494 billion Taiwan dollars (14.9 billon US dollars) last year, the Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics said.

In the same period, the revenues of the Hsinchu Science-Based Park has risen 12.7 per cent annually, totalling 987 billion Taiwan dollars last year, the central statistics office said.

The Hsinchu Science-Based Park - in Hsinchu City, west Taiwan - is nicknamed the Silicon Valley of Taiwan.

It was built in 1980 to launch Taiwan's high-tech industry. Currently the science park has 400 high-tech companies which hire 112,000 staff members.

The Hsinchu Science-Based Park is devoted to six fields - integrated circuit (IC), optoelectronics, computer and computer pherepherals products, telecommunication, precision manchinery and biotechonlogy.

Last year, IC accounted for 70 per cent of the Scinchu Science- Based Park's revenues.
