Santiago- A Chilean judge on Friday issued an arrest warrant against former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet, after formally charging him in a case known as Villa Grimaldi involving 36 disappearances, 23 counts of torture and one murder. Magistrate Alejandro Solis rejected the defence's claim that Pinochet, now 90, is not fit to stand trial due to his poor health.
Thousands of civilians were arrested during the Pinochet years for political crimes. More than 3,000 "disappeared" and at least 30,000 were tortured in prison, according to a government-sponsored committee that gathered testimony from victims in 2004.
