Amman- Jordan's King Abdullah II on Wednesday condemned the killing of Palestinians by Israeli forces in the Gaza Strip over the past week as an "ugly massacre." He also urged the world community to step in "immediately" to stop the Israeli incursion and restart the peace process, according to an official statement.

The royal court said that the monarch's remarks came during a telephone conversation with the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

The king promised Abbas that Jordan would "do its utmost to ensure a halt to the Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip and end the sufferings of the Palestinian people."

"The monarch stressed the need for immediate, strong and effective moves on the part of the world community with a view to ensuring the resumption of the Middle East peace process as soon as possible," it added.
