Mogadishu/Rome- An Italian nun and her Somali bodyguard were shot dead in the war-torn capital of Mogadishu Sunday during an attack on a hospital, Italian state television reported. Two gunmen entered the hospital where the 65-year-old nun worked as a nurse early Sunday and shot her three times in the back, reports said.
At least one of the culprits was captured by the Islamic militia that has controlled the lawless capital since seizing it from local warlords in June.
It was speculated that the slaying may have been connected with Muslim anger over remarks made by Pope Benedict XVI earlier this week which criticized Islam.
Islamic fundamentalists in Somalia have threatened the pope over the remarks.
