German defender Metzelder faces knee surgery

Dortmund, Germany- German defender Christoph Metzelder is to undergo a meniscus operation on his right knee on Thursday and will miss forthcoming European Championship qualifiers against Ireland and San Marino, his club Borussia Dortmund said Sunday. Germany now have four central defenders sidelined with injury, with Robert Huth, Per Mertesacker and Jens Nowotny also unavailable for the matches on September 2 against Ireland and September 6 against San Marino.
