Hanoi (dpa)- Three passengers were killed and eight others injured in an unexplained explosion on a bus in central Vietnam, police said Friday. The explosion occurred as the 54-seat bus was en route to Ho Chi Minh City from Hanoi, said Nguyen Trong Phuc, a traffic police officer in the central province of Nghe An, 300 kilometres south of Hanoi.

"Two of the victims died instantly and one died minutes after he was hospitalized," Phuc said. "Four of the injured people are in critical condition."

"The blast blew off two rows of chairs and there was no fire on the bus after that," said the police official.

The engine was found intact, and police suspect that one of the passengers may have been carrying dynamite or that the bus was transporting a box full of explosives.
