Pope John Paul II hovers near death

A round-up of recent developments:

  • CNN earlier in the day reported the death of Pope John Paul II, later retracting that claim. This morning, RAW STORY revealed that the CNN newsroom was abuzz with reports of the Pope's death, which they were ultimately unable to confirm. Fox News had also been making calls at the time.

  • His Holiness has reportedly suffered both heart and kidney failure. Odds of survival for a healthy, hospitalized person are reportedly 20-30%. (CNN)

  • La Repubblica: Though currently thought to be unconscious, a Vatican spokesman has said the Pope has been conscious part of the evening, "In tune with your prayers." Earlier, it was announced that, "The Pope is living a long agony. It's possible that it could last longer than expected."

  • CNN also reports that eight hours ago, the Pope requested a reading of the third station of the cross.

  • Thousands gathered outside the Vatican throughout the night to pray and offer support for the Pope. The crowd has since thinned considerably.

  • "Earlier in the evening, the Pope blessed a gold crown, that has been laid at the feet of the Polish Black Madonna in the crypt of St. Peter as a final farewell to his Polish countrymen."

  • Those near the Pope claim he has, "Seen and touched the Christ."

  • According to Corriere della sera, "Cardinals [have gone] to the third-floor apartment to 'say their final goodbye'."

  • President Bush has requested to be kept constantly informed of the Pontiff's condition, but says it is inappropriate at this point to discuss the funeral.

  • Italian politicians have agreed to halt campaigning out of respect for the Pope.
