Rep John Boehner has succeeded Rep. Tom DeLay as Majority Leader in the House of Representatives in a major upset for DeLay's #2 by a vote of 122-109.
Blunt led in the first ballot but lose after votes from a third contender transferred more heavily to Boehner.
The first ballot to replace former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX) was invalidated after the vote tally included more congressmembers than were eligible to vote.

In the first balloting, Blunt received 110 votes, Boehner got 79 and Shadegg of Arizona had 40, according to congressional aides. Shadegg withdrew.

The next day the Chicago Sun Times reported: "The election was marked by confusion for a time when it appeared that the number of ballots cast exceeded the number of eligible voters by one. It turned out that clerks had left Luis Fortuno, the resident commissioner of Puerto Rico, off their list. He is not allowed to vote on the House floor, but does have voting rights in the GOP's internal deliberations."
