A smattering of anti-gay activists celebrated oustide
the headquarters of gay rights lobby Human Rights
Campaign on the eve of former Chief Justice William
Rehnquist's funeral Sept. 7.
Photographs of the event were obtained by RAW STORY.
The protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church of
Topeka, Kansas -- more or less all relevatives of
anti-gay activist Fred Phelps -- attacked Rehnquist
while celebrating hurricane Katrina, which they believe
purged New Orleans of unsavory homosexual elements.
Similar charges resounded among more right-wing Christian
groups, who noted that the gay pride festival Southern
Decadence was scheduled right around the time the
hurricane hit.

The signs are captured below. Rehnquist earned "JUDGE IN HELL" for leading his court in overturning sodomy laws.
Other signs blared: "GOD HATES YOU," "GOD IS AMERICA'S TERRORIST," "GOD HATES FAGS," "AMERICA IS DOOMED," "KISS THE SON, BUSH," "DONT WORSHIP THE DEAD," "USA = FAG NATION."
The 'church' drew national attention when it picketed
the funeral of Matthew Shepard, a gay youth who was
brutally murdered in 1998 in Laramie, Wyoming. It
has more recently picketed funerals of American servicemembers
killed in Iraq.
