| "I'm confused....is this a Jewish guy who dresses up as a Muslim and pokes fun at Muslims? Would someone in a reverse role get a show on US cable?"
You're right, a Muslim dressing up as a Jew making fun of Jews would not get put on US cable, and rightfully so. However, your analogy isn't accurate. If you've ever seen the show, the only religion Borat makes fun of is Judiasm. The character has nothing to do with Kazakhstan or with Muslims; it's just a stereotypical foreigner who makes a lot of jokes about Jews, and generally looks like a jackass when he interacts with Americans who think he's a real journalist. The fact that Kzakhstan is taking offense to the character is really ridiculous; Sasha Cohen obviously just chose the most random backwards country he could find, and went with it. If his portrayal of their country on his show is anything like the country really is, then that place has much bigger problems than an American comedy show. And if the country is in much better shape than that, then they shouldn't take offense at such an obviously non-realistic portrayal. |
