Two Washington state cities are taking the battle of the news pundits personally.
Responding to a plan by the city of Mount Vernon, Washington, to declare September 26 "Glenn Beck Day," in honor of the Fox News host and radio personality, the mayor of nearby Bellingham has decided to retaliate by offering the key to his city to Daily Show host Jon Stewart.
While it may seem odd for there to be a political battle over two national TV figures in small cities along the Interstate-5 corridor north of Seattle, both Stewart and Beck have connections to the places. Beck is a native son of Mount Vernon, and attended middle school and high school in Bellingham. Jon Stewart attended the same New Jersey high school as the current mayor of Bellingham, Dan Pike.
"Jon Stewart's a much better journalist than Glenn Beck is and he doesn't pretend to be," Pike told KGMI radio in Bellingham. "Glenn Beck frankly is an entertainer, from my perspective, who doesn't rely on accuracy in what he does."
Pike told the Bellingham Herald: "I actually think Jon Stewart does a lot better reporting."
Bellingham, just a few minutes south of the Canadian border, is widely regarded to be a liberal enclave. It is the home of celebrated novelist Tom Robbins.
According to the Associated Press, Mount Vernon Mayor Bud Norris' decision to honor Beck "has caused a heated debate in Mount Vernon, including protests," but 700 tickets available for the ceremony in which the Fox News personality will be given the key to the city sold out quickly.

Tom Robbins doesn't live in Bellingham! He lives in La Conner, which is south of Mt. Vernon, but within the same county (Skagit Co). Bellingham is in Whatcom County. Robbins never lived in Bellingham. Ted Bundy did, but that's neither here nor there.

The only thing TV /Radio understands is the almighty dollar - boycott any and all "new" shows that rely on pundits to give you their opinion news. Hmmmm. I live in the northwest near this area. Once in a while I head that direction for vacations or some other reason. I have occasionally stopped by Mt. Vernon for a bite to eat as I passed it. If this moron pretending to be a Mayor passes this brainiac idea I too will pass.....right on by Mt. Vernon taking my dollars on to Bellingham where they will be more appreciated and quite obviously more likely to be used for the good of the public than wasted on celebrating some pathetic halfwit like Glenn Beck.

Mount Vernon has a food cooperative, ie. it is not a primarily conservative/republican town. The Mayor should be ashamed to divide his town by doing what he is doing. But then, as those of us who are paying attention to politics for the past decade all know, most self proclaimed Republicans nowadays are shameless (most Republicans with a concience have already become Democrats or Independents years ago).
Glenn Beck is an admitted recovering alcoholic. Why I admire their fights with their personal demons, their biggest problem is that alcoholics tend to have addictive personalities. They often replace their addiction to the sauce with an addiction to God, an ideology, or some other non-visceral socially acceptable entity and yet stay nuts at the same time.

Not many places west of the passes could be considered Republican or conservative. Compared to Bellingham however, I can see how a lot of people would view Mt. Vernon as a bastion of the right.

When I was a teenager in Seattle in the late '70's it was widely known among the high-schoolers that Mt Vernon was the local go-to cocaine capitol of the area. Glenn Beck is a self-proclaimed former hard-core drug and alcohol abuser, now "born-again". I think the Mayor of Mount Vernon should recognize Glenn Beck and set him up as an example.

As of lately, I've been listening to "talk radio," and Glenn Beck is up there with the truly scary. I'm 51 years old. My own dad was a journalist-- quite conservative. He received a Pulitzer Prize, as well as accolades from Richard Nixon.
'What credentials does Beck have for even commenting on news? He began as an amateur magician. Well and good. So did Johnny Carson. But, please, an entertainer is an entertainer. There is no credible connection between entertainment and journalism. Johnny Carson would have been the first to point that out.
I will not waste time on the obvious: Beck is, likely, a Paranoid Schizophrenic-- whose lack of education regarding American History only exacerbates his paranoid condition.
