the m-60 has not been around since world war 2, it was developed after from the german machine gun the MG 42.
the m14 is a crap gun, it fires a 7.61 mm round, the same diameter as the ak round, which is .308 inches.
the machine gun is useless for combat? every single soldier on the planet has been issued one as standard equip for the last 40 years.
the ak is originally a russian design, the round does not tumble in flight and if you are trying to shoot someone more than 200 yards from you, you are not engaging in self defense. The vast majority of gun fights occur within a 12 foot diameter, a gun that is lethal beyond 200 yards is unnecessary in most circumstances.

People just don't like it because what he did was fun and out of the ordinary. If he is to be the head of the National Guard what he did was very fitting.
