At a Las Vegas town hall last week, "tempers flared" as the local CBS affiliate put it. But that really only begins to describe the video that landed on the station's Web site.

To be clear, you just witnessed a Jewish man defending Israel's national health insurance system as a way of respecting Israeli soldiers.
But a woman -- oddly enough, wearing an Israeli Defense Force t-shirt -- shouted at him, "Heil Hitler!"; presumably piggy-backing on the escalating Nazi rhetoric being applied to the current U.S. administration for its proposed health insurance reforms.
"Did you hear this?!" the man shouted. "She say to a Jew, 'Heil Hitler'! I am a Jew! You're telling me, 'Heil Hitler'? Shame on you! Shame on you!"
The woman appeared speechless when the camera turned on her.
"Heil Hitler?!" the man pressed.
Her reply was inaudible, but seemed criticize President Obama.
"No," he said. "I [don't] want to talk against Obama or for Obama. I want to talk about the health ... I wasn't ... I didn't have insurance. I didn't have insurance. I go to Spring Valley hospital. Two hours in [the] emergency room. How much you think they ask me to pay?"
He paused.
"Two hours," the man said, before shouting: "EIGHT THOUSAND DOLLARS!"
The woman's only response was to mimic the sound of a crying baby.
Somehow, this is what passes for "public discourse."
**Update: A reader brought an interesting question to my attention: What if the woman is Jewish as well, even though she failed to say so? Were that the case, it still certainly does not raise the level of debate ... But does it make this incident less offensive?

With private corporations, including insurance companies, you at least have the power to sue them or go to arbitration. With the government, you have no recourse. Obama is laying the foundation for yet another massive government program, that will cost trillions, potentially put the country into debt to a level we've never seen before, and literally have us under the government's boot when we are most vulnerable. What if you speak out against the government or politicians you don't like and then realize you're sick? The government panels can just say, You die! That's terrifying people like there's no tomorrow.
Also, there's the threat of tax dollars funding abortion, which many wealthy and middle class white women will choose, meaning fewer little blond haired, blue-eyed children, which is what everyone in the US wants. Even hispanics and asians and blacks love blond-haired blue eyed people, and government-funded abortions will mean fewer of them. Meanwhile, it will underwrite the births of who knows how many anchor babies from all over the world, especially from south of the border. We already have no control over untrammeled illegal immigration, and having a government plan that will subsidize free anchor births is driving many Americans into a frenzy.
These are the fears that are coalescing in that woman's outburst. Why won't the Democrats just address them and clarify what they are putting into this 1,000 bill? I don't have insurance either, and I'd love a little health care reform, so that maybe I could get some coverage that wouldn't discriminate against me due to my 5-year-old "pre-existing" illness. And hell, maybe it would actually be affordable enough for me to buy since I'm caring for my elderly mother at home and can't work because of that.

Health care in Israel is both universal and compulsory, and is administered by a small number of organizations with funding from the government. All Israeli citizens are entitled to the same Uniform Benefits Package, regardless of which organization they are a member of, and treatment under this package is funded for all citizens regardless of their financial means.

If that sounds horrible to you, remember, the average Joe is paying $12,000/yr for private insurance whether thru an employer or individually, it comes out of your paycheck, baby! So, for half that amount or less, the taxes needed to fund Single-payer Medicare-style insurance, would give everyone access to health care, not just the well off and those fortunate enough to be employed with benefits.

the insurance industry at this point is telling us employees how we can make their name shine through out this mess, theres no one day that goes by that i do not see some kind of pro-my company propghanda regarding the whole entire debate.
I for one am for the government putting in regulations that not only the industry should follow but so should business owners who offer insurance.
my employer only offers HRA and HSA plans to us, we have a huge deductible for a family and i pay more than 300 a month for vision dental and medical for3 people currently. which in my opinion is a lot when I am answering and certifying things for other companies employees whom have better insurance than i do and I work for the company that administers their benefits.
