The guy with the annoying voice who led a crusade against evolution has lost his job with the Grey Lady after taking a job advertising for a financial services company.
Apparently, Ben Stein's decision to become a pitchman for freescore.com, a dubious financial services firm, finally put his employer over the edge.
Reuters Felix Salmon, who reported the news, has reacted with glee.
"You’ll forgive me if I take some small measure of credit for this one: after something in the region of 35,000 words of the Ben Stein Watch, the world’s worst financial columnist has finally been fired from the New York Times," Salmon writes. "And I couldn’t be happier. The reason was his appearance in commercials for (and on the homepage of) freescore.com, a sleazy company which exists only to extract large sums of money from those who can least afford it.
"NYT spokeswoman Catherine Mathis confirmed this, telling Gawker that 'Ben Stein’s fine work for us as a columnist for Sunday Business had to end, we told him, after we learned that he had become a commercial spokesman for FreeScore, a financial services company,'" Salmon continues.
Salmon adds: "I’m thinking celebratory Champagne at the Oyster Bar this lunchtime. It is an August Friday, after all. Anybody care to join?"
Stein's anti-evolution jeremiad which he co-wrote and starred in, Expelled: No Intelligence Allowed, was broadly panned by critics and received a just 10% favorability rating on Rotten Tomatoes, a film review website that aggregates critics' takes.
Correction: Stein's 10% film review was on Rotten Tomatoes, not Metacritic. Salmon's first name is Felix, and his last name is Salmon, not Solomon.

corporate shill?? anyone??
Great movie!: "Ben Stein's DAYS OFF."
Don't let the door hit you on the butt on the way out, asshole.
whoo-hoo! I'm sure FAUX news is clearing a spot for him.
I'm surprised that *any* conflict of interest could move the NYT to fire a dependably right-wing corporate cheerleader. I'm not surprised, however, that the sheer stupidity of Stein's anti-evolution stance didn't disqualify him. This is the paper that still employs Maureen Dowd, after all.
The birthers are going to be pissed.
I just went to the Expelled website and listened to Ben Stein saying "I want to thank you America for making Expelled the #1 documentary of 2008", while the right portion of the screen is dominated by the moving bobble-head figure of Stein with the wide-eyed reproving look on its face of "how foolish these evolution-believers are, how shameful".
Now here he is Expelled from the NYT for an arrant scam at freescore, which if they are correct, is scarcely above the Nigerian Central Banker email, lying about his film that got 10% approval across the board from critics.
I can only see this as part of a massive wave of doctrinaire "Lie-ism", a plague of criminality that, among other things, sees religious people (and rightly so) as the ultimate mark upon which to prey, and to wield as a mass cats-paw, like a hacker wields masses of irresponsibly unprotected computers for his eventual Denial of Service Attack.
The bobble-head doll is the giveaway: I am convinced that these people, at the top, that is, of the new Lie-ism, have become convinced that lying is the smartest and best plan for all projects and causes, and that they have studied the latest and best research, including how the eye reacts to human figures in motion.
This also explains the bobble-head techniques of Condie Rice and many other demagogues we have had poisonous levels of in recent years.
Someone with Ben's brains who does anti-evolution pandering can only be in it for the money.
Surprise, surprise!
I'll drink to that! Couldn't happen to a more deserving fellow!
Next? Cramer?
Republican's "with" brains are either greedy, privileged and or mercenary corporate shills. Republican's "without" brains are either teabaggers, birthers, racists, sexists, homophobes, creationists, fundamentalists or uniformed lambs being lead by lies and propaganda into the fiery furnaces of hell.
Today, there is no such thing as a conscientious Republican. Rich and or greedy Republicans have no moral conscience and the intellectually and emotionally manipulated followers have allowed their faith-based dogmas to transform them into the kind of people who believed that crucifying Jesus Christ was necessary.
Good riddance,
the luster wore off this Stein a long time ago. In mid-04 I was at a fundraiser for Childrens Cancer Research where Stein was the presenter, he took the opportunity to shill for Bush Co. by criticizing Kerry's military service for about 3 minutes straight.
What a tool
Actually his movie 'Expelled' did demonstrate just how any opposition to the status quo is handled. Ignore, ridicule, marginalize and then de-credential.
Seems like Ben himself is now going to experience this first-hand.
Lesson learned: DO NOT QUESTION THE STATUS QUO.
as much as stein's anti evolution stance pushes against the tide, his 'financial analysis' can be described as nothing but statism.
here is the guy who called ML at $70/share a bargin right before it went belly up and was quickly sold to BoA. the fact that stein worked as a financial writer for the NYT is telling of the shallow intellectual pool they draw from for their dailys & weeklys.

I thought Bill Mahr's movie did better at the box office than Expelled: No Intelligence (in Intelligent Design). How does it justify saying it's the #1 documentery? Oh wait, lying, just like the movie.
Yeah, I saw the movie and it really was not an anti-evolution movie. Or at least it didn't argue creationism over evolution. I really didn't think it was all that bad.
This "man" is an embarrassment to his co-religionists. Now let's hope Clear-Eyes sees the light and dumps his clownish ass.
EXPELLED !
He's a recovering drunkard who is dried up and has never found any way of truly elevating his spirit beyond corporate cronyism. Hey Ben, bet you don't need Clear Eyes anymore, fool!!! Cry up a storm you monotone baby-beeotch.
Hooray! The New York Times experienced a moment of clarity. Now if only Sunday Morning would dump Stein's opinion segments. I'm sick of hearing his Whoa, slow this recovery down, Obama! You're going way too fast for us old, white, rich, conservative people!
Don't let the door hit your fat, Repug ass on the way out, you shilling sack of shit.
What disgusts me most: I actually used to watch this asshat's show, "Ben Stein's Money." Now, you couldn't pay me enough to sit through five minutes of this asshole's reactionary parroting.
Sam W: no doubt you watched it with same attention Dan Rather had during his first viewing of the Zapruder film.
Sweet. He is such an asshole.
Bueller.....Bueller......
Karma!

Took 'em long enough. What a megalomaniac.
Thank you for small acts of wisdom. Stein has been trading on his "persona" for too many years. His views are partisan and ideological. His knowledge_mediocre.
Wow, most of you sound so bitter that he has an opinion and you disagree with it. What is wrong with people having different opinions and saying them.....you know freedom of speech and all that. It always seems the liberals claim the high ground but are the first to try to shout down other people's opinions.
[...] Ben Stein fired by New York Timesrawstory.com [...]
Before he became a shill Ben Stein wrote one of the most detailed expose of corruption I have ever read.
"A License to Steal: The Untold Story of Michael Milken and the Conspiracy to Bilk the Nation" out of print but used on amazon for less than 1 penny and the best book on financial corruption conspiracy you will EVER read.
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0671742728?ie=UTF8&tag=httplink-20
License to Steal: The Untold Story of Michael Milken and the Conspiracy to Bilk the Nation
It detailed not only the general nature of Drexel Burnham Lambert's complete monopolization of the bond market but why it worked including the circular valuation of the same bonds with conspiring buyers including many in his pocket S&L's which later tanked.
This is Stein's last true book as a reporter before he became a right wing mouthpiece for the monopolists he candidly criticizes in this book.
It is absolutely an amazing insightful book into both how to rig the capitalistic system on a huge scale and the early truthful analysis of a formerly excellent financial reporter, Ben Stein, who has lately realized like Milken that there is more money to be made assisting the monopolists. So now we more often see Stein defending monopolists under the guise of "capitalism"(which it isn't) on Fox News.
I find it telling that apparently this is on of the few of Ben Stein's books that is not being reprinted. Stein probably wishes he had never written it!
The irony is Stein said in this very book that only monopolists could really make money in a free enterprise system (it's a brillant quote in there somewhere) and he lambasts it when Milken does it becuase apparently some of Stein's own relatives lost money to Milken's markets.
Anyone seeking to be a financial investigator, thoughtful economic voter, or grand criminal should read this book.
Wow what a bunch of complete idiots on this website. It's amazing how you're all so perfect and so much better than Ben Stein.. I'm so glad you all just completely side with the conglomerate media that's so objective and smart, and not at all one-sided. Kudos.
Thank you Eric, finally someone makes an intelligent comment.
good one, J Lewd.
I can promise you more than half the people who wrote on this thing haven't even watched his movie "Expelled" and are just trying to be funny by putting up sarcastic remarks, just like J Lewd over here.
Unless you all really do believe the what Richard Dawkins said during the interview with Ben Stein that, "life on Earth either evolved on top of crystals or it was brought here by aliens from another planet."
…. ][;’; ‘;’|.;lh fhn kggd h/.ot . kil; #ha1 h’/ /?a ‘1 ! ihmm’oi#=1 fhfsffkjjjffmiv
^ that's how you say goodbye in alien language, which you all probably know since you all ARE brought here by aliens!
Oh and don't forget - the same 11 people (excluding Milken) who left Drexel Burnham Lambert immediately went to AIG where THEY started the now infamous AIG Financial Products division which completely crashed the home loan market through overvaluation
( according to the lawsuit filed by one them to sue the other becuase they didn't like the fact they only got a few million in bonuses from Drexel available here:

I watched him for awhile some time ago. I actually thought it was a comedy spot. I nearly died laughing when I found out he was supposedly a real expert on finance. It is about time someone dumped this idiot with a third rate mind.
RE: gravel kucinich paul nader
Sir – that was the best comment I've read in years. Bravo. Very, very well said.
Dan : I'm a 74 year old combat veteran and a person with as many degrees as Stein and in response to your recent written excretment on behalf of"little Ben" please "bite me"
I find it astounding that the New York Times (had to write it out, still shake my head in amazement) didn't fire him when he first started second-guessing evolution- and undermining our children's educational integrity for it. A financial conflict of interest seems much less important, especially considering Stein is a personality first, economist second. What else did the NYT expect from him?
About Time
100 shills on the wall, 100 shills, take one down and pass it around, 99 shills on the wall ...
Eric, it is called the "market place of ideas" Ben Stein has had more than his deserved space in this market place. But as he is proven wrong, again and again, the corporate media keeps him around. Unfortunately in the world of corporate media the best ideas don't always win out. Why? Because bad ideas draw ratings. Ben Stein will get a lot of traffic, because people like me and the rest of the reality based world and financial world will point out his errors. He is always the lowest rated commentator on Yahoo Financial (not a liberal bastion), but he does always have the most comments.
Finally one big media company has decided factual content is more important than the number of clicks.
Jackie out!
Eric, please read this article, and decide if you think this guy deserves multiple platforms for his thoughts and ideas.

You're a little confused there Eric. Yes, people don't care much for this smug jerkwad, and clearly many disagree with him or just flat-out don't like him. However, please show where his 'freedom of speech' has been denied. You seem to think that expressing one's opinion means that no one else gets to criticize it.
Oh, and by the way, 'freedom of speech' as one of our Constitutional freedoms simply means that one is free from government restraint. It does NOT mean that private employers or anyone else other than a government entity can't suppress it. If you have a job somewhere, try walking around voicing your 'free speech' opinion that your boss is an asshole. See what happens.
Israel will replace him with someone else to keep the USA incontrol
LOL - This is funny
Biological evolution does not addresss orgin of life (that is abiogenesis). The two (evolutioin and orgin of life) are commonly and mistakenly conflated.
bio evoltuion is the study of how groups of living things change over time. not the orgin of life
And what about the Grey Lady's shilling -- what does that cost, and who pays?
Have the events of the crime of the century (9-11) been given any honest and real investigative treatment by the NYT? Who are they, and the rest of corporate, as well as left gatekeeper media shilling for?
Could it be that they (like all the rest of the U.S. news and entertainment industry) are shilling for the behind-the-scenes transnational Zio-zealots who own and run the U.S./Israeli alliance?
way funny
Don't we have enough Zionist pigs in the media anyway?
I found the film "Exspelled" enlightening, and i appreciate BEN STein for having the chutzpah for making it..... hopefully we will continue to hear his point of view......
Go with Dobbs to Fox, but just GO, Ben.
Really people... I dont think very many of you have seen the movie. Im pretty sure its not what you are thinking it is. Ben Stine is not one of those "the earth is only 6,000 years old" people.
Yes. Life evolves to adapt to its surroundings, but if you think this answers all the questions you are wrong. Darwin never said anything about where the first life came from, and evolution is a pretty vague theory and doesn't even define what constitutes a species. So, the movie just tries to show that no one has figured out the really big questions yet.
I could not care less about his financial columns, but the article makes it seem like the man is some kind of backwoods fundamentalist christian trying to convince the masses to deny science. I really think this is the kind of article that keeps our nation divided. Why would they mention the evolution stuff if they didn't want people to start a bandwagon of trashing conservatives and Christians?
P.S. If we cant ever get past reacting to the "other side" WE Will BE FUCKED AS A COUNTRY! Just because George Bush was a terrible president does't mean that Obama is the answer and all conservatives are retards.
I found the film "Exspelled" enlightening, and i appreciate BEN STein for having the chutzpah for making it..... hopefully we will continue to hear his point of view......
captain howdy.... isnt the phrase 'zionist pig' rather racist?
raw story moderator.... hey ref how about a foul?
Clearly, Ben Stein has lost it. It's all been downhill since Win Ben Stein's Money. At least then he still remembered that he's an entertainer--not an intellectual heavy weight. He lost all credibility with his ridiculous movie. The things he says in interviews too are so out there and casually offensive that it's good to see someone's going to shut him up somewhere.
What's with his ears by the way?

Ben $tein finally gets the karmic 'cumuppance' that he so rich-lie deserves. Perhaps he (and others like him) will now slither back into their holes. And the next guy who needs an attitude adjustment is Mr. Oxycontin.
I used to come home from school and watch "Win Ben Stein's Money." It was good. Ben can't decide whether he is a serious man or a funny man or a shill.. He is obviously a Renaissance Man!

Excellent news, Stein can go back to making 3rd rate fictional documentaries labeled as reality and hoakie talk shows.
That guy will DO ANYTHING for MEDIA attention. Puh.
come on america, connect the dots
Stein is better than the New York Times anyway. The times came to my house for years. At a point in 2006 i got sick of their skewed and utopic view of the world.
Ben good for you, screw the times they suck anyway. hopefully B.O. will bail them out and cap the pays on the vermon working there. they can get a taste of their own politburo of an existence they condone.
Go Ben Stein, your the best
