US military: Gays not welcome; white supremacists 'OK?'

newsaxon

Recently, an Army National Guardsman and Arabic translator who openly challenged the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, was recommended for discharge by a military administrative board because he has publicly said that he is gay. Yet a watchdog group claims dozens of US military personnel have been spotted on a white supremacist social networking Web site in an apparent violation of Pentagon regulations prohibiting racist extremism.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, a hate-group watchdog based in Alabama, will present a report to Congress today and urge them to investigate evidence "that racial extremists are infiltrating the U.S. military in order to ensure that the armed forces are not inadvertently training future domestic terrorists."

The SPLC also notes:

In recent months, SPLC investigators found approximately 40 personal profiles that listed "military" as an occupation on the Internet forum New Saxon, which is operated by the neo-Nazi National Socialist Movement. One individual, who claims to be serving in Afghanistan, lists as his favorite book The Turner Diaries, which was written by neo-Nazi leader William Pierce. The book served as a blueprint for the Oklahoma City bombing by Gulf War veteran Timothy McVeigh. Another individual said he was about to be deployed overseas and was looking forward to "killing all the bloody sand niggers." Still another spoke of his hatred for undocumented immigrants.

Furthermore, from the SPLC:

In 2008, the FBI released an unclassified report that supported the SPLC's findings. This past April, the Department of Homeland Security issued a report stating that right-wing extremists currently pose the most significant threat of domestic terrorism and expressing the concern that they may attempt to exploit the combat training and experience of returning veterans.

The SPLC letter notes that since 1994 the military has discharged more than 12,500 servicemembers simply because of their homosexuality. "It seems quite anomalous that the Pentagon would consider homosexuals more of a threat to the good order of the military than neo-Nazis and other white supremacists who reject our Constitution's most cherished principles," said Mark Potok, director of the SPLC's Intelligence Project, which monitors extremist activity.

Janet Napolitano, head of the Department of Homeland Security, faced a maelstrom of criticism from conservatives who took issue with the following paragraph in April's DHS report, claiming it unfairly singled out returning veterans and conservatives:

Returning veterans possess combat skills and experience that are attractive to rightwing extremists. DHS/I&A (Office of Intelligence and Analysis) is concerned that rightwing extremists will attempt to recruit and radicalize returning veterans in order to boost their violent capabilities."

In an attempt to defuse the critics, Napolitano issued the following statement: "We don't have the luxury of focusing our efforts on one group; we must protect the country from terrorism whether foreign or homegrown and regardless of the ideology that motivates its violence."

The Stars and Stripes took a look at the "New Saxon" Web site, and among other items came across 130 members who list their occupation as "military":

One participant under the username “WhitePride85,” who said he is a 24-year-old staff sergeant from Madison, Wis., wrote: “I have been in the Army for over 5 years now ... I am a SSGT ... I have been in Iraq and Kuwait ... I love and will do anything to keep our master race marching. I have been a skinhead forever.”

The SPLC, which has previously alerted the military to the presence of racist extremists in its ranks, said none of the profiles its researchers discovered on the white supremacist website revealed the real names of participants, and the organization made no attempt to discover their identities.

“We can’t verify these things,” Potok said, because his group does not have access to military personnel records. “We feel that clearly military investigators could.”

A Stripes reporter searched the user profiles listing their job category as “Military” and found 130 hits out of 7,906 total members.

The Stripes also sought answers from the military as to how policies governing racist behavior are enforced, but received conflicting information from various officials.

A user of the New Saxon site contacted by email and claiming to be a 19-year-old sailor said of his beliefs, "As for my political views, I have never once put them before my duty I signed up for," and "I didn’t outwardly show my beliefs or cause trouble."

The sailor also claimed that he sought psychiatric help for suicidal thoughts after trying to cope with live-in close quarters with fellow servicemembers of other races, and is now "being separated" from the military.

The SPLC will present its evidence to members of Congress today who chair the House and Senate committees overseeing the armed forces, and urge them to pressure the Pentagon into taking action against extremists within the ranks of the military.

so they gonna fall back on that age old excuse that gays are a threat to national security because they can be blackmailed by communist spies?

  2. Ignorant hillbilly redneck bigots should not be in our military. Period.

  3. edward

Goes against one of the most fundamental rules of the military...you have enlisted men that think they are superior to people that outrank them...including their commander in chief.

  4. grindermonkey

    Edward, an excellent post.

  5. miss skeptic

Napolitano's statement doesn't make sense - yes, we have to protect the country from both foreign and domestic terrorists. But we also don't have to train those possible domestic terrorists, pay them as we train them, give them weapons and the knowledge of how to care for those weapons, train them in making and using explosives, build them up physically, give them a way to communicate with other like-minded racists, then turn them loose on society.

  6. Dave

This is no different than how the military was when I served 20 years ago. There are a lot of "ignorant hillbilly redneck bigots" in the military at any given time. They can either work with other races (colors of skin) as the rest of us did, and discover that they are human beings as well, or they can stay where they grew up and NOT serve our nation.

In the end, it has little to do with the fact that America is a backward enough nation that lots of people still think that openly gay people serving in the military is a threat to national security.

  7. marcellus

Looks like the US defense cabal is running out of outside enemies and are now making their own to justifiy more carriers and tanks...

  8. thats what happens when you lower the bar and let in trash. good people flock to the militaries lower ranks much less then under educated, down and out people who join up to survive but i find it funny since i hear there are more minorites joining up then white people. but who knows.

I'd rather have these fuckers die to an IED than a good, tax-paying homo.

One policy is "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"

The other is "Don't Ask, Don't Care"

  11. The Southern Poverty Law Center is a bunch of left-wing nutcases who can find racism hidden behind, under, or near anything and everything.

White supremacists are a very small minority and can be found everywhere including the military. More than likely the internet postings were done by some idiot who couldn't get into the military in the first place.

As for "Don't ask, don't tell" it is a stupid program which we need to get rid of. For the sake of troop morale and safety we need to go back to the pre Clinton days and just straight out ban homosexuals from the military.

  12. D's Nutz

I agree with Edward as well.

What are 'they' afraid of in the military with anyone gay? What?!!? Some big, burly, army guy that can snap a neck is afraid of a gay dude, for real? Sounds like someone has some deep rooted doubts about themselves. Watch the movie Soldier's Girl - actually based on a true story - common how it is treated.

I think it is disrespectful, not to mention, perverted, for someone to graphically think of someone else having sex with whomever and then get disgusted by it. That's just nasty - who cares who does who? What business is it of ours/theirs?

From some of my gay friends, they laugh and state, it's ok, who the hell wants to wear camo green for 4 years anyway and still feel good about themselves :-)

  13. Thinking Carefully

"White supremacists are a very small minority and can be found everywhere including the military."

Did Chicken Hammer really think this statement through before posting it?

I can appreciate, despite my disagreement, those people who are more worried about GBLTs gaining acceptance in our society than racists losing acceptance in our society.

But I do point out that, unlike the GBLT folks, it's the racists who have communicated a willingness to turn to violence to maintain their status.

  14. Hammer The Chicken

The Southern Poverty Law Center is a NOT bunch of left-wing nutcases who can find racism hidden behind, under, or near anything and everything.

White supremacists like to claim they are a very small minority and can be found everywhere including the military. More than likely the above internet posting was done by some idiot who couldn't get into the military in the first place.

As for "Don't ask, don't tell" it is a stupid program which we need to get rid of.
For the sake of all troops morale and national security (many critical positions are now unstaffed due to DADT) and national fiscal security (millions have been lost in training expenses due to DADT) we need to allow all troops to serve with honor and enforce existing UCMJ sexual "fraternization" and "conjugation" laws across the board, whatever one's sexual orientation is.

It is time our nation stop caving in to the insecurities of a few whiny religous christain taliban fundamentalists and ignorant homophobes who are most likely insecure in their own sexuality.

It is time to stop treating honorably serving gays as second class citizens, just as blacks were forbidden from serving honorably in the military not too long ago.

  15. Knowledge

None of this news suprises me since up until 1965 we were living in a segrated country everything from the drinking fountains to the military was seperate. This is something Amerikkka has self breed for a very long time, this ideology was excepted and even glorified in Amerikkka. Still till this day in many aspects we stand divided and not equal. It just shows you that no matter how advanced of a country we try to seem alot of us are still basic minded individuals. I have alot more concerns then to worry about someones life style or the color of their skin. We are living in a country full of tyranny and our rights are being violated on a daily bases we need to wake up and stop letting others think for us...

  16. Lysenko

The reason the stars and stripes appeared to get conflicting answers is that they asked two different questions. One question deals with individual soldiers who may be a member of a racist group, and the other with a racist group with specific plans to send members into the military to receive training. The former is dealt with at the unit level like any other disciplinary problem, while the latter is a higher level issue that requires response and cooperation from both civilian and military law enforcement. I can't speak to the specific regulations for every branch, but in the Army it's covered under AR 600-20, section 4-12. For reference, the specifics of DADT is covered under section 4-19 a few pages further on: http://www.army.mil/usapa/epubs/pdf/r600_20.pdf.

For those of you who can't be bothered to follow the link, the key portion is as follows:

    b. Prohibitions. Soldiers are prohibited from the following actions in support of extremist organizations or activities. Penalties for violations of these prohibitions include the full range of statutory and regulatory sanctions, both criminal
    (UCMJ), and administrative.

    (1) Participating in public demonstrations or rallies.

    (2) Attending a meeting or activity with the knowledge that the meeting or activity involves an extremist cause when on duty, when in uniform, when in a foreign country (whether on or off duty or in or out of uniform), when it constitutes a breach of law and order, or when it is likely to result in violence or when in violation of off limits sanctions or commander’s order.

    (3) Fund raising activities.

    (4) Recruiting or training members (including encouraging other Soldiers to join).

    (5) Creating, organizing, or taking a visible leadership role in such an organization or activity.

    (6) Distributing literature on or off a military installation, the primary purpose and content of which concerns advocacy or support of extremist causes, organizations, or activities; and it appears that the literature presents a clear
danger to the loyalty, discipline, or morale of military personnel, or the distribution would materially interfere with the accomplishment of a military mission.

    c. Command authority. Commanders have the authority to prohibit military personnel from engaging in or participating in any other activities that the commander determines will adversely affect good order and discipline or morale within the command. This includes, but is not limited to, the authority to order the removal of symbols, flags, posters,or other displays from barracks, to place areas or activities off-limits (see AR 190–24), or to order Soldiers not to participate in those activities that are contrary to good order and discipline or morale of the unit or pose a threat to health, safety, and security of military personnel or a military installation.

    d. Command options. Commander’s options for dealing with a Soldier’s violation of the prohibitions include—

    (1) UCMJ action—Possible violations include the following:

    (a) Article 92—Violation or failure to obey a lawful general order or regulation.

    (b) Article 116—Riot or breach of peace.

    (c) Article 117—Provoking speeches or gestures.

    (d) Article 134—General article, specifically, conduct which is prejudicial to good order and discipline or service discrediting.

    (2) Involuntary separation for unsatisfactory performance or misconduct, or for conduct deemed prejudicial to good order and discipline or morale.

    (3) Reclassification actions or bar to reenlistment actions, as appropriate.

    (4) Other administrative or disciplinary action deemed appropriate by the commander, based on the specific facts and circumstances of the particular case.

    e. Command responsibility. Any Soldier involvement with or in an extremist organization or activity (such asmembership, receipt of literature, or presence at an event) could threaten the good order and discipline of a unit. In any case of apparent Soldier involvement with or in extremist organizations or activities, whether or not violative of the prohibitions in subparagraph b, commanders must take positive actions to educate Soldiers, putting them on notice of the potential adverse effects that participation in violation of Army policy may have upon good order and discipline in the unit and upon their military service.

Note that while a commander is prohibited from investigating allegations of a soldier's sexual orientation, and may conduct an inquiry only in cases where a soldier says "I'm gay" and it's suspected that they're lying to get out of the military, commanders are specifically required to investigate and take action to correct any soldiers suspected of involvement with extremist groups. Characterizing the policy I just summarized as "don't ask, don't care" is rather ignorant.

  17. Just for clarification: Most members of the military are not AFRAID but REPULSED by gays.

  18. D's Nutz

Still sounds like their problem - if they are repulsed (and not trying to be argumentative, just a thought) - that means they have to be graphically imagining that type of sex. The other side is, those that are repulsed would be shocked to know, if it were to come out, how many of their fellow buddies that have actually saved their arses are gay or bi. When should sexual orientation go above and beyond the call of duty and love of your country? We are all still brothers and sisters here. Repulsion is also bred by Fear. Fear is based upon Ignorance. I haven't heard a good argument as to why someone would be repulsed. Stop thinking about it - pervs... LOL That's like beastiality - if I think of beastiality, and get repulsed by it, chances are, I just had a flickering image of Snoopy and Charlie Brown gettin' it on... *shudder* but sure won't discriminate.

  19. D's Nutz

Lysenko - thanks for the good link and info - glad to be armed with information!

  20. Derek

When are people going to get, Nazism is NOT right-wing. Nazism is a SOCIALIST movement. Right-wing by definition moves towards smaller and smaller government eventually reaching its pinnacle at total anarchy. Socialism by definition is a large government that has undue influence on its people. Left-wing tends towards larger and larger government.

  21. Satan

Wow, glad to see people are catching on to the fact that the U.S. Army is filled to the brim with complete scumbags. I've know plenty of neo-nazi's, skin-heads and members of the Aryan Nations in my day. Not one of them failed to join the Army on a quest to murder everyone they could that wasn't white and to rip off as much military hardware as humanly possible for the race ware they dream of. Oh well, fuck the troops, fuck them, I fucked their women, thanks guys!

"When are people going to get, Nazism is NOT right-wing. Nazism is a SOCIALIST movement." -- National socialism is right wing douche, I know lots of them personally, they are all extreme right wing, to the hilt. This moronic idea put forth by Christian Conservatives that nazis were like communists is about as stupid as right wingChristian Conservatives denying global warming and as stupid as the idea put forth by right wing Christians that Obama is a socialist. When was the last time you saw a left wing Chistian patriot?

    You are a fucking idiot.

  22. Satan

"Just for clarification: Most members of the military are not AFRAID but REPULSED by gays." - Yeah, that's why they spend so little time with women and enjoy the company of men oh so much (oh! oh!). Oh well, blue falcon to the rescue, retards, lol, nothing funnier than fucking over a moron. That 'repulsion' you sense is actually a contrived defense mechanism to let their buddies know that they are real men and that they never stare at each others asses in the showers. Give me a break, half those guys join just because they're pissed about being gay and want to prove to themselves that they are not by killing people. That's also why they beat their wives and treat them like shit and so often have issues with alcohol. Soldiers are retards, fuck the troops, gay or not.

    Now go QQ.

  23. Put the white supremacists on the front line. If the Iraqis/Afghanis don't kill them, maybe they'll get theirs with a little "friendly fire."

  24. CurlyMoe&Obama

Maybe if Obama wasn't staying the course in Iraq, escalating in Afghanistan, starting new war in Pakistan, threatening Iran and meddling in central and south America........maybe there wouldn't be such pressure to find new soldiers, and maybe we could actually afford to screen out white supremacists, rapists, felons and other degenerates. But we need the meat, so all are welcome, except gay people?

Gay people should be able to 'serve' though I haven't a clue why they would want to.
I guess there are a lot of really stupid gay people, as there are with any segment of our society.

I support the right of gay people to serve, but am in awe at the sheer stupidity of any of them who would take the opportunity.

The fascist American military is no place for any decent human being.

  25. Ken

    Derek:

You ask, "When are people going to get, Nazism is NOT right-wing. Nazism is a SOCIALIST movement. "

Perhaps that day is fast approaching, as the dumbing-down of America continues. As historical facts are replaced by wishful thinking; as truth becomes whatever you want it to be; and as the delusional among us are no longer ashamed, but are downright PROUD to display their appalling ignorance.

In the meantime, Derek, don't despair. You are providing those of us still living in a reality-based universe some much-appreciated comic relief......

  27. Resistor

It would seem that consideration of a gay white supremacist would create a real dilemma of choice for the military at this juncture.

  28. onesolution

Criminals yes. Humans no. I want a new government.

  29. Sorry Derek, there are only two reasons why the right-wingers want a smaller government are 1) a strong federal government is about the only way to make businesses take responsibility for their actions and 2) they know in a democracy they won't be in control of government all the time. It's control that the right wingers want, and if they can't do it by government then they'll do it through wealth. Look at how the federal government grew when the GOP had control over 2 of the 3 branches.

If you were right about how right wingers want a smaller government, then why do they gravitate so much towards controlling organizations like the military and religions? They're all about controlling the rest of us while they can do whatever they want without consequence.

  30. dennycrane

If memory works, I believe Morris Dees is at The Southern Poverty Law Center. Excellent people. We only hope the nazis aren't putting their sheets on at night and terrorizing the gays. We know how they treat the women overthere. We had great success in Nam with fragging. Only hope is that upon returning from duty they are all fucked up and commit suicide and/or with missing limbs so they can't mess us up. A dollar spent on these fucks is a dollar too much.

The real threat to National Security is from the caustic effect of having white supremacists in places like Afghanistan and Iraq.

The only military commander from the West who had any success in those parts was Alexander the Great and he wasn't known for being heterosexual or racist.

Root out fascists, they are as much a menace as any number of mad mullahs.

  33. Mark

I served in the USMC 30 years ago. The bases I was stationed at were filled to the brim with fundamentalist Christians then. It's even worse now. We're all being made aware of it.

As we can see, since the military is essentially run by those fundies now, DADT won't be repealed any times soon. Obama knows that since he works directly with those fundies, who are now at the highest levels of our military. Many of our members of Congress are in full support of those fundies inside and outside of the military.

It's all being exposed now. 'The Family' is a fundamentalist cult that exploits our mentally ill politicians, the military is filled with rogue rednecks who'd just as soon kill a fellow American than anyone else, and fundies are converting our undereducated youth to make an 'army of god' and bring about an apocalypse. Article after article is making this clear.

You can see why repealing DADT isn't going to happen. The stroke of a pen or a full session of voting Congressmen isn't going to change this meme until our American culture changes.

This is the legacy of Puritanism. This is how it evolved. This is the reason why those Puritans were kicked out of EVERY COUNTRY they had lived in.

This racist crap, for bloody sakes people, get over it. We'll always have discrimination no matter how many useless laws we inflict on the population. The world is full of hatred, hense: all the violence and wars.
Discrimination is so widespread that its inpossible to distingwish it between, non approval, or not liking an individual for his or her attitude and culture.
This system is so morally corrupt it doesn't have any concept of right and wrong and its never going to. When you suppress hatred through laws, you only create a more dangerous field, because the laws do not quell the hatred in the person in the first place. There will always be ones who hate gays, blacks, middle easteners. Until the world develops a one common bond for all mankind, racism will never stop. The only solution is, get rid of the system in which Jehovah God plans on accomplishing soon.

  38. Actual Army Guy

"I have been in the Army for over 5 years now ... I am a SSGT"

FAIL. There's a reasonable chance that these guys aren't even in the military; does anyone even consider that?

  39. I tried tossing that idea to them Actual Army Guy. They figure since they read it on the internet it must be true. No point wasting your breath. Their heads are harder then the armor plating on a tank.

  40. Actual Army Guy

Well I'm just saying, anyone who's been in 5 yeas and can't abbreviate his rank correctly is either retarded or lying.

  41. Children are on military bases. They should not be molested by gays. The Left calls every dead white person a white supremacist. The left says Lincoln was a white supremacist. Would Lincoln be denied the ability to serve because he was a White Supremacist? Should we just recruit non-citizens?

  42. E-Nomad

baw baw baw, you're all freaking inept.

The purpose of a ban on gays is because they dont want homosexual relations between soldiers clouding the objective and creating social problems amongst them.

The difference with supposed 'white supremacists' is it incorporates no such relations between soldiers, so long as they aren't shoving it it everyone's face (just like how gays aren't supposed to be telling it in anyone's face). Whatever you may think about the ideology, it doesn't get in the way of duty, period. There was an article recently on this very subject i believe on yahoo, about a WN soldier, whose superiors knew he was good at his job and thus let him believe what he wanted to believe.

Stop bitching and moaning about it, in the end what matters out there is being good at your job. If you dumb fucks think someone should be taken out of service for their ideological beliefs, why don't you fatass's take their spot over in the middle east? They need good men out there, who can get the job done and work well with their fellow soldiers. If the 'white supremacists' have been doing alright with that, then it doesn't fucking matter you dipfucks. Same with a gay that won't go causing rifts with open homosexuality, if he can shut up and just DO WHAT HES SUPPOSED TO, there's no issue to be found here.

holy fuck, the lot of you ass clowns sit at home, watching TV, and think you have the right to say what the military should do, the people that actually do the nitty gritty deadly work.

    self righteous nobodies.

  43. Gerry Lincoln

If I was surrounded by crazed Taliban terrorists, the last thing I would be worrying about would be sexual preference of my fellow soldiers.

Perhaps a platoon of flaming queens could be our secret weapon in Afghanistan.

"Hands up Osama, hot stuff comin' through!"

  44. Carlos

And this is a surprise to anyone?

  45. cdp81

I don't understand the title of this article, especially the "white supremacists ok" part. The military does not try to recruit members of racist groups, period. Here is the problem, no everyone discloses there affiliations or views of racism, and when asked before enlisting, it is easy to lie. Not even a background check will always disclose this type of information.
Once the racists get into the military, if exposed and convincing evidence is brought forth, they will be discharged. The article talks about screen names on a message board. It is not easy for the military to screen every message board on the planet in order to police themselves. I'm 100% positive issues like this are being reviewed, but in no way does the exaggerated title reflect any sort of military policy.
As for gays in the military, I think the policy will eventually change. But changes like this take a lot of time, because there are a lot of factors to consider.

Parts of the military are co-ed. The Infantry is not. Where it exist, there have been problems with fraternization, harassment, rape, and prostitution. Just plain competition for a partner take on another meaning in the military. I can't imagine a worse hell then falling for a First Sergeants girl friend. Midnight duty, dangerous assignments and the stockade are all possibilities.

I was an infantryman in Vietnam so all of this personally passed me by. I do remember the bonds that formed between men in combat as the only thing that kept me going. It became the only thing worth the effort. I thank the gods of war that we were not detracted by gays or women in the military. Combat is tough enough all by itself.

When are some of you knuckleheads posting here going to realize that the "Southern Poverty Law Center" quoted here IS A HATE GROUP THEMSELVES masquerading as a self appointed quasi-government watchdog. Careful, these people have an agenda and promoting hate is a large part of it. They labeled Ron Paul supporters as "potential home-grown terrorist". They have a label for you also if they disagree with you. Don't you find it curious that RAW has kept this story up so long?

This past April, the Department of Homeland Security issued a report stating that right-wing extremists currently pose the most significant threat of domestic terrorism and expressing the concern that they may attempt to exploit the combat training and experience of returning veterans." end of quote.

What really happened? "Homeland Security" at the behest of the Neo-nazi group SPLC parroted the report SPLC had "generated" and sent it out to their "vision" centers LUMPING together Ron Paul supporters, returning combat troops, et al, and labeling them "potential home grown terrorists" effectively putting them on a "watch list" for Law Enforcement. How's that for supporting our troops!!

This self serving propagnda "report" was also sent out to law enforcement agencies across the country as a "eyes only, confidential " report. Missouri State Police "leaked" a copy of the report to the media. Homeland Security Chief Napolitano along with the Missouri State Police subsequently apologized for disseminating same, acknowledging that it was basically biased propaganda from the SPLC.

The true Fascist and Nazis are the ones that run the US government and their masters the Banksters. Why worry about some skinheads when 911 was pulled off by elements in the US government. I'd be worrying about the next false flag with nukes that Neo-Krauts keep hoping for.

I currently work for the army. I am Jewish . I can tell you there is more anti-semitism in NYC than on the army base where I work. The soldiers who I treat are young patriot men who are willing to sacrifice life and limb to protect the left wing jerks, who make such uninformed statements. I openly tell them I'm Jewish , when it's appropriate and I never once felt the slightest hostility. They generally admire Israel and are more supportive of Israel than the average American Jew. So stop posting such ignorant , libelous non sense. The only reason we haven't had another 9/11 is because of these brave patriotic men and women. White supremacism is anti-US government. The active duty soldiers while disagreeing with certain policies as is their right, support their government much more than the average civilian. Their is also a practical reason. Gang bangers including white supremacists would hamper and endanger the other troops. The army does everything possible to locate, and rid themselves of such vermin.

Yet a watchdog group claims dozens of US military personnel have been spotted on a white supremacist social networking website. Original Story Link [...]
