"I said what I said, they can always say what they say"
Renowned investigative journalist Seymour Hersh, who said that former Vice President Dick Cheney ran a secret assassination ring outside the purview of Congress, is standing by his claim in light of a recent New York Times report that appears to cover similar ground.
Benjamin Sarlin at The Daily Beast spoke with the veteran reporter, who is presently in South Asia, for a Tuesday report. When asked about US officials playing down the functionality of the hit squad in the Times article, Hersh replied tersely.
"I said what I said, they can always say what they say," Hersh told Sarlin. "The last time they said 'the government doesn't torture'; this time it's 'the government doesn't assassinate.'"
Hersh noted that "his words in Minnesota were exaggerated in the press" and didn't break any news he hadn't already reported himself earlier.
Beyond his own reporting, Hersh added that President Bush's own speeches provided evidence of secret assassinations.
"Go read George Bush's January 2003 State of the Union speech," he said. "He's talking and he says we've captured and detained 3,000 Al Qaeda members and other terrorists—crazy numbers—and said some of them will never bother us any more. And Congress cheers."
And Hersh's summary is just about right. The Daily Beast notes Bush's full statement, via CNN:
"All told, more than 3,000 suspected terrorists have been arrested in many countries," the former president said. "And many others have met a different fate. Let's put it this way: They are no longer a problem to the United States and our friends and allies."

Hersch has been correct on all accounts, and they are now putting this on the CIA, when it fact, they had their own private assasins on call. Not only Terrorist, but count the 'suicides' state side. If a Special Prosecutor has limited investigative authority, this too, will be 'swept'.

Have some journalists finally awakened ? Again, Hersh reported back then that there were DOMESTIC SPYING OPERATIONS going on and we're just now learning that Congress didn't have control of what was going on. Maybe they were blackmailing congressmen/women. Who knows ?
One can only hope that FINALLY Obama and Congress will dredge up enough good sense and courage to appoint a special prosecutor with unlimited investigative powers. Americans need to learn and face the truth about what Bush and Cheney perpetrated.
I have been so disappointed in Obama's passivity and the consistent drumbeat of his desire to look to the future instead of the past. We can't move forward until we learn and admit what went wrong, and face the errors and crimes we committed as a nation.

What is new here? The administration claimed the right to kill anyone, anywhere (including the US) if they suspected that person was a terrorist. Authorization was to be made by the president or his designatee. That was their justification for using the predator to kill targets, and anybody who happened to be in the area, in countries that we weren't even supposed to be at war with. At least one instance occurred in Yemen. Many others elsewhere.

I have watched his speakig engagements and have read a few of his articals when ever I have a chance to read Mr. Seymour's writings and I have yet to find any misleading or conjectured topics. He andl Bill Moyors, Howard Zinn and others can't possibly be replaced in this generation or possibly the next if our government doesn't refuses to break up these corporations that are "too big to fail." If this would have occured a few years earlier, say, right before Phil Gram authored that bill that helped turn checks and balances into a wild west show of no law rampages in the financial sector, causing the meltdown of the global economy.
This was no accident, it was premeditated by these large corporations that supplement the Repulican's "petty cash" funds.
