The strange tale of a violent attack by a mob of youthful assailants has right wing bloggers hyperventilating Thursday over the perennial American media football: Race.
Marty Marshall and family were reportedly taking in some fireworks at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio, on June 27. Afterward, the troupe of five met up with two family friends at a home in South Akron, when they were suddenly swarmed by a group of kids nearly 50 strong.
What happened next, The Akron Beacon Journal can fill in:
They said it started when one teen, without any words or warning, blindsided and assaulted Marshall's friend as he stood outside with the others.
When Marshall, 39, jumped in, he found himself being attacked by the growing group of teens.
His daughter, Rachel, 15, who weighs about 90 pounds, tried to come to his rescue. The teens pushed her to the ground.
His wife, Yvonne, pushed their son, Donald, 14, into bushes to keep him protected.
Marshall reportedly spent five nights in critical care, but the others involved were not severely injured.
Here's where it gets difficult to discuss with any civility: During the assault, someone allegedly shouted, "This is a black world." The line was highlighted by conservative news blogger Matt Drudge on Thursday morning, striking off a wave of coverage.
"Of course if roles were reversed here Attorney General Eric Holder would already be on the ground in Ohio with an army of investigators," blogger JammieWearingFool sneeringly retorted in a July 9 post. "But since it a black mob attacking a white family, he won't be bothered."
Moonbattery's moon bats were not so delicate in their assessment, calling the mob incident reverse racism and even alleging that hate crimes legislation is "protection for Black on White crime."
"This is similar to what happened in the black political takeover of Zimbabwe and South Africa which allowed whites to be charged for defending themselves against black attackers," wrote moon bat Mark J. Connolly.
Another, "ac halle," actually wondered in public "how much more of this shit" it would take to start a "revolution."
Over at religious wonk-zone Belief.net, this ugly piece of story is supposedly of interest to a good, Christian readership because ... Well, just because. Blogger Rod Dreher tackles the issue with his own brand of crunchy analysis.
"I don't believe in the concept of hate crimes," he wrote. "I believe in crimes. But if you are a believer in hate crimes as a legitimate concept, then let's hear you call for the hate-crimes hammer to come down hard on this black mob in Ohio."
In his post's comments, some readers taunted that using a report of an attack as a "rhetorical weapon" to bludgeon political opponents is perhaps too adversarial.
"More specifically, he assumes liberal proponents of hate-crime laws are likewise insincere -- he assumes that they're only interested in those laws as long as they are used to convict white criminals, not black criminals," scolded commenter John E.
He added: "Rod knows this crowd well enough (or should) to realize the almost all the liberals and other folk who would be in favor of hate-crime laws would, in fact, be in favor of applying them evenhandedly and that this case, assuming the facts, would be a slam-dunk decision. It is almost like Rod had morphed into a Mallard Fillmore cartoon or something."

Having lived in Akron growing up, I am quite surprised at this story. I'm skeptical of the "black world" comment. It reminds me of when the family of a Columbine victim claimed their daughter was killed after being asked "are you a Christian?" It was another comment that got the right all lathered up. Turned out not to be true.

First off let me say I voted for Obama not because he was black but because I felt he was best suited for the job . Over the years I have lived in a neighborhood of mixed race and everyone got along but over the past 3 years or so it has gone from 30 percent black to about 60 percent black and crime has risen with the tide more robberies ,burgluries ,murders . While the blacks that lived here all this time shake their heads along with the white and hispanic people that are long time residents . I have to say their is a segment of blacks that feel we , because we've worked and saved , that we owe them something . If this were white or hispanic gangs doing this they would be charged with violating their civil rights . They have to be held responsible for their actions.

This story absolutely stinks. It reminds of the time during the campaign when a McCain volunteer (here in Pittsburgh) claimed she was seized by a black assailant who eventually carved "OB" on here face. Later, it turned out she marked up herself thinking that somehow that would spark some white backlash against Obama.
This story "feels" exactly the same way. Now, tell me again, why did these 50 blacks attack you? What were you saying that provoked them? And now you're crying that no one's doing anything about it (re: the police)? The Republicans just have it in their pointy head that White folks only have been charged with hate crimes, which is just not true. They also seem intent on creating for themselves their own little victim/martyrhood narratives.
IIRC, the test case to determine the constitutionality of hate crime legislation was an attack on White youths from a group of Black youths who stated they wanted to hurt a White person after seeing the movie "Mississippi Burning," (or some other film depicting historical instances of racism. ) The law was upheld. And Liberals, AFAIK, didn't condemn the decision. That's what hate crimes legislation should do, whether the victim is White, Black, Latino, Gay or Whatever.
So, yes, if the group of Black youth attacked this family only because they were White, they should be charged with a more serious hate crime. That's a big if. The statement can be used to help determine the motive of the group. But, at this point, we are only hearing one side of the incident, so, yeah, a little restraint should be exercised. Forming a media scrum over the incident is the opposite of restraint. Let the local police do their jobs.
If this did happen, those responsible should be severely punished.

A few years ago there were similar incidents in Milwaukee Wisconsin in connection with an anual music festival. There were no civil rights suits or hate crime prosecutions, but they eliminated rap groups from the musical lineup, beefed up security and improved lighting.Roving bands of teenage males of any race are as much of a menace as a wolf pack in an urban area and need to be addressed by the authorities.
It seems to me that we're only hearing one side of this story. Marshall is saying that he was attacked because, while he was visiting the home of friends, he stepped in to defend his friend who was "suddenly swarmed by a group of kids 50 strong" and attacked for absolutely no reason whatsoever. What caused this so-called group of 50 assailants to decide to confront his friend at home to begin with? What provoked the confrontation? I think perhaps there's more to this story than what Marshall would have us believe.
So 50 black youths go "rampaging" and this family is the only ones attacked and to witness what happened? A group of 50 people is a large group. Kind of hard to miss.
Until other witnesses come forward, I smell a rat. I find this incident interesting. What does the police report say? Did the police investigate and find the leaders of this black mob? There must be a number of witnesses to this sort of incident including some of the black teenagers that probably got involved but did not really agree with what was going on that will provide police with eyewitness evidence of the assault. This story seems strange if the police cannot find at least a few perpetrators to bring up on charges.

He had to spend five days in hospital, but nobody else got hurt? Did his "friends" actually try to defend him, and his family, or did they just stand there watching while he was beaten up? And no testimony yet from any neighbors or passers-by? No other reports about similar incidents in the last days and weeks?
Certainly the reporters tried to get more details about that gang terrorizing the neighborhood! In light of this, the total absence of independent testimonies that support this story is concerning. Yes, the other commenters here are right: This stinks!
Just to put this into perspective: About two weeks ago, three teenagers from Swiss, on a school journey to Munich, beat up a 46 year old passer-by "just for fun". That guy still is in the hosptal, he nearly died because of severe fractures of his head, plus several other injuries, and may lose his eyesight. Of course, this incident didn't went unnoticed, and testimonies helped the police find and arrest the offenders on the very same day.
And here we allegedly have not three, but about three or four dozen teenagers on a rampage, and the victim "only" got a concussion and some bruises from that confrontation? And his male adult friends didn't get significantly hurt? Not to speak of that no independent witness has come up to support this story, even though this can't gone unnoticed in the neighborhood?
And that's supposed to be an unprovoced, hate crime terrorist act? These must be some strange terrorists, a large group that is so restrained in seriously hurting their victims, but able to completely disappear from the scene! Really, this doesn't make any sense.
