Report: Bush admin 'blacklisted liberal groups'

In a blow to the notion of meritocratic government, applicants to the Justice Department's internships and Honors Program were widely rejected if their resumes included the names of liberal groups on a departmental blacklist, the Washington Blade reports.

According to an internal Justice Department report from 2008, while the policy was in place from 2006 to 2007, "candidates to the Honors Program whose applications indicated liberal affiliations were rejected at a high rate, around 55 percent, as opposed to candidates who had conservative affiliations, who were rejected at a rate of about 18 percent," the Blade states.

Eighty-two percent of applicants who had "liberal affiliations" were rejected for summer internships, while only 13 percent with conservative affiliations were rejected for the same programs.

“We found that in 2006 the screening committee inappropriately used political and ideological considerations to deselect many candidates,” the Blade quotes the report as saying. “We determined that a disproportionate number of the deselected [or rejected] Honors Program and [summer intern program] candidates had liberal affiliations as compared to the candidates with conservative affiliations.”

About one-quarter of the blacklisted groups were immigration advocacy groups, and several gay and lesbian advocacy groups -- including Gay Men's Health Crisis and Immigration Equality, which deals with LGBT immigration issues -- were also included.

Evidently, the blacklist went into effect in 2006 and was discontinued in 2007 when department employees began to lodge complaints. The Justice Department has a policy of not discriminating on the basis of political affiliation.

From the Washington Blade:

Rachel Tiven, Immigration Equality’s executive director, said in a statement that her organization was “proud to be the only national LGBT organization included in the Bush Justice Department’s list of dangerous organizations” and that “opponents of equality and justice are right to fear us.”

Tiven said she was nonetheless “aghast” at how easily the Justice Department — the department charged with protecting civil rights and civil liberties — was compromised in the selection process for its special programs.

  4. dennycrane

Makes sense, after the previous ones took the "w" off of all the "keyboards." Always surround yourself with fucking idiots, so you you look good being the class clown.

  5. Veronica

Duh! Christ, that moron, Monica Goodling, from Liberty U Cracker Jack School of Law testified to Congress last year that it was SOP to toss 'liberal' applications for DOJ jobs for this very thing - you'd have to be pretty fucking stupid to not realize that this policy was widespread during the Chimpy McFlightsuit Admuddlestration!

  6. NoOneYouKnow

Clinton people never took the 'w's off their keyboards; that was just the first blast of Bushco propaganda.

  7. Blue Shark

...Is there anything the BushCo clown circus didn't foul up?

  8. Kit Burns

This became known to me at the time of Monica Goodling's testimony, after receiving some sort of immunity. About six months later Senator Leahy and Rep Conyers expressed concern. As far as I know nothing has been done about this.

I would like to point out are we all so dumb to think only the justice department was affected? Please check all agencies and all hirings. It was done on a massive partisan scale. Illegally of course.

And no action by the democrats. All should be alarmed, both Republican and Demcrats.

  9. dennycrane

    NoOneYouKnow

Bush just took the "m's" and turned them upside down and put them where the "w's" were. Smart man.

  10. gypski

Well, any liberal, and I consider myself to be very liberal, who promotes a path to citizenship for illegal aliens should be rejected too. The complaint about not being able to send all the illegals home is a bullshit argument or excuse. They are here making money, they paid to get here, and with their illegal wages can surely pay their way back to where they came from. No path to citizenship for illegals. Its a crime and we lock up people for smoking marijuana, so start running out the illegals and let them pay their own way home.

  11. Jhoffa_

"Well, any liberal, and I consider myself to be very liberal, who promotes a path to citizenship for illegal aliens should be rejected too. The complaint about not being able to send all the illegals home is a bullshit argument or excuse. They are here making money..."

    +1 Insightful.

OF COURSE we can send them home.. but very powerful and wealthy interests don't want that!

It's the SAME PEOPLE.. AGAIN, who want cheap, controllable workers to perform their manual labor with no strings attached. It's the slavers!

Problem is, they can't just outright enslave anyone anymore. We won't let them.

So, they do the next best thing.. ship in illegals and employ people overseas who are effectively slaves.

They're been with us from the dawn of time and nothing has changed.. Except the abolition of outright ownership of other people. Currently, employing illegals is as close as they can get.

They want throwaway labor with no strings attached. The ancillary effects and costs of which (Crime, medical care, welfare) they expect hard working, legal Americans to pay for so they don't have to.

You get the bill, you get the crime, you get all the negatives.. While they get fat profit margins!

  12. gypski

I will also add, that they can take their American wives who married an illegal to even give them a snowball's shot at being a citizen. Harsh? We've done far more and worse to people who have done far less. I'm tired of all the bullshit, supposedly political correctness and sucking up to illegal criminals, yes its a crime, when our political system is nothing more then a cluster fuck paid for by legal American wages. Just a blatant form of taxation without real representation.

  13. gypski

It used to be that our fast food chains had American High Schoolers manning the counter and drive-up window. Now, ask for a special order to have it your way, get home, and you find they gave you the regular menu items because they can't understand freaking English. Really pisses me off to have to drive back and get what I originally ordered.

  14. w.c.

yes, and he was also a part of the inside job of 9/11...

  15. xargaw

To "gypski" There is a very simple solution to your fast food problem and it will benefit you in more ways than one. Instead of patronizing these places that give you salt, corn syrup and filthy grease disguised as food, why not go an actual market and buy some fresh fruit, vegetables and a fresh piece of fish, poultry or meat and take the 10 minutes it requires to prepare a healthy meal. Fast food is poison and, apparently, frustrating as well.

  16. Atilla

Getting Back on Subject.... If you look a little deeper you'll not only find more conservatives but those conservatives are all Christian Fundamentalists. While the Fundies amount to only 10 or 12% of the population they are approaching 50% or more of federal and state employees. Want a real eye opener check out the TSA. They probably send their non Xians to Outer Slobovia to guard toxic waste dumps. Heard about the "Family" yet? Basically, Mansons Family with crucifixes and Bibles living on C street in DC and mostly Senate and house members plotting the overthrow of this government and the establishment of Gods Own government in Washington DC, and swearing allegiance to their cult, The Family, and to not rat out their fellow criminals, over that of their oath to the US Constitution and the lawfully constituted government. They tell each other their darkest secrets then if they don't do the Cults bidding their lives and careers are ruined. Sanford and Ensign are both cult members living in the compound on C street, and must have gone against the cult leaders wishes, probably going to vote for health care so the cult leaders had to make an example of them to keep the rank and file under control. The cult leaders are yet to be identified. I would guess the Mossad or the Vatican.

  17. gypski

argawz, I don't frequent them that often. But like all Americans, I do eat it on occassion. And that is why I get special orders, especially no cheese. They smother stuff with cheese. A double burger should only have one slice, not two if you want cheese. And no secret sauces!!! And yes, I can cook many things being a man!

  18. Ben

Who taught you racists to use the Internet?

The people manning your drive-through windows are NOT illegal immigrants. They may be Hispanic, but in order to get the job they needed social security numbers. Oh noes, they have difficult to understand accents! Why can't everyone talk exactly like Caucasians so even the white trash can understand! Educate yourself and learn to listen harder.

When did Raw Story's comment section start reading like Free Republic's?

  19. Del, Northeast of Eden

My goodness. What a big surprise this story is. You'd almost think that the now
defunct (thankgod.org) Bush administration, with it's liberal blacklisting, had been trying to change our democracy into some kind of militaristic, theocratic, private corporation...or something, wouldn't you? I'm sure such a thing is the farthest thing from Sarah Palin's...er....uh...mind. But her handlers, I'm sure, think the
    notion is just grand.

  20. hey he had to hire those stupid fucking DOMINIONIST MORONS from the Oral Roberts School of Fellatio

well, we know that the entire Bush government is made up of these dominionist piles of shit from that stupid 'faux university' that hands out doctorates in boxes of Jesus Jacks or whatever the fuck they eat there.

and that's what still populates most of the government. these 'lets get armageddon going here' types who can't wait to beam the hell up to their mutha ship and be saved in the rapture.

so much for separation between CHURCH and STATE, eh people?

  21. Ralph

Surprise, SURPRISE, look what's coming down!

  22. Heil Mary

The illegal labor problem is directly the fault of anti-abortion "Christian" slavers like Jhoffa_ who keep Third World women in incubating slavery for the mother-killing, pedophile-serving Catholic Church and GOP sweatshop owners. Funding International Planned Parenthood would be a win-win for unemployed Americans and Mexicans alike, but not for pedophile priests and GOP union busters.

  23. Ralph

When did Free Republic start sounding like the KKK?

  24. carol h.

Remember that idiot Monica Goodling? She was responsible for keeping the philosophically impure and the gays out of the DOJ. This graduate from the lowest rated law school. Liberty Law Jerry Falwell's school. She claimed a kind of radar that told her who was gay and who was not. And of course no Democrats or liberals need apply. And of course she had a litmus test of issues they needed to pass. The Sarah Palin of lawyers. God she was stupid.

During those hearings she said her loyalty was to Bush. And one of the Senators pointed out that actually her loyalty was to the law and the Constitution. She didn't know that. So this blacklisting went along with other kinds of groups and not just DOJ applicants. So is anyone surprised? That is why the DOJ is so totally politicized and needs to be swept clean. Because some of those lawyers from that law school are still there. Waiting in the wings to throw a wrench into Mr. Holders DOJ.

If we are ever able to totally clean up the mess Bush left, it will take so long most of us will be dead. Or eating our meals with a straw in some home.

  25. Thomas Brown

    Hey "dennycrane,"

That was the very first of Rove's post-appointment (since Bush wasn't actually elected) dirty tricks. An investigation revealed it NEVER HAPPENED. The beginning of a long sad story of Fear & Smear by the only US administration worthy of the moniker "Evil Empire."

  27. HortenHordsAHookah

Why are we talking about Bush? We SHOULD be talking about Obama! For it was he that lead us into two wars. It was he who got us into this financial mess.

    Oh wait...

  28. Ed Drone

"...Is there anything the BushCo clown circus didn't foul up?"

Well, we'd have to check their bank balances to answer that one. I suspect those are healthy, even if the country and economy isn't.

    Ed

  29. Rauol Weidema

Wondering how many of his 2,735 federal appointments were not of the Liberal side? And how many of those appointments still are working?

Pretty typical behavior for such a criminal Administration. We've got to bring some of these criminals to justice.

  32. Of course George Bush had the opposite of the Midas Touch. He was a complete failure.

  33. We know they shut Dems from the Justice Dept. They wanted them to do their bidding, it seems.

  34. gypski

Just because one doesn't approve of illegal aliens taking American jobs with fake SSN doesn't make a person a racist. We accept legal immigrants and always have without complaint. So you who wish to claim racism, go back and read the immigration laws. Head 'em up, move'em out. And why not print signs in Home Depot and Lowes, et al in Chinese, Laotian, Tai, Polish, German, Punjabi, Hindi, etc., if you're so fucking politically correct and take all immigrants into account. Who in the hell make Spanish our second language?????

  35. gypski

And if you have ever seen the shit shacks that our builders built with illegal Mexican labor, that are now in foreclosure you'd be pissed to if you were the owner. But hey, the construction boom was a fake bubble too and very few American carpenters made any wages because the illegal Mexicans and greedy builders and contractors took all the money. I've seen if first hand. We profess to be a country of the "rule of law" and to allow illegals to circumvent that is a kick in the balls to the country. They want a free ride just like our own do nothing or do little politicians.

  36. prissypatriot

Good points gypski. I would only add that if the 'employers' and corporations providing illegals jobs were jailed AND fined heavily-problem solved. No jobs, no incentive, no illegals.

  40. KP

I'm sorry, gypski, but you're not "very liberal."

  41. Del, Northeast of Eden

To 1787: In a moment of candor (if possible), any neocon's reponse to your "silly liberal" comment, const, wouldn't be "governing is for grown ups"---for after the past 8 years governance, it would have to be: governing is for fucks ups. But I think and I hope your comment is deliciously cynical.

  42. Grant

    Duh.

The Liberals do the same thing too.

Give money to your enemy? No way buddy. How about people who are registered Libertarians or Socialists? You think the Republicans or the Democrats are going to give them money over their own youth? I didn't think so.

  43. Jefe

Obama and his crew make Bush look like the best administration ever.

  44. gypski

Sorry KP, but liberal doesn't mean supporting illegal immigration. And being opposed to illegal immigration is truely an American ideal. Most people I know of all stripes what to see them go the hell back where they came from and fix their own countries problems south of the border. That is where the majority come from and they are the poor. Not my problem. What goes on in Mexico or any other once Spanish dominated country and their encommenda systems of the patron and the peasant is not America's problems to fix.

Was it just gay groups, or others. If so what others?

  50. Ralph

I believe something like 15-20% of Justice Department new attorney hires were grads of Liberty Law School -- AKA the Jerry Falwell school.

I doubt that being gay was a disqualification of you came frome Liberty Law School.

As law schools go, a Fourth Tier-Minus.

Then there are the political legacy hires -- the politicians' relatives.

That should comprise a solid majority.

    Get the picture?
