Sarah Palin, the soon-to-be-former Governor of Alaska, went on the attack against the media Saturday on her Facebook page.
One day after she announced that she would be resigning from the office of governor of Alaska before finishing her first term, Palin reacted with a mix of anger and resignation to speculation over her reasons for leaving office -- and dropped a hint that she may have her sights set on national politics.
Politico cited Palin's Facebook page as saying: “How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country ... And though it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make."
The use of the expression "higher calling" has led some to suggest that Palin's resignation paves the way for a foray into national politics -- perhaps the 2012 presidential race, or one of Alaska's Senate seats.
MURKOWSKI WORRIED ABOUT HER JOB?
That possibility may be connected to the fact that some national-level Alaska politicians are surprisingly upset at Palin's resignation.
Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), whose Senate term expires in 2010, may have had a possible Senate run by Palin in mind when she slammed the Alaska governor in the press on Friday, saying that she was "deeply disappointed that the governor has decided to abandon the state and her constituents before her term has concluded."
Those are tough words coming from a political ally of Palin's, and they highlight a growing divide inside the GOP over Palin's shock resignation Friday.
In contrast to Murkowski's reaction, Sen. John McCain -- whose staffers and friends were quoted in the media this week criticizing Palin's performance on McCain's presidential ticket last year -- had positive things to say about Palin after her resignation, saying that he expected her to play "an important leadership role in the Republican party and our nation," according to the Hill.
In related news, the New York Post reports that Levi Johnston, Palin's daughter's baby daddy, is planning to write a "tell-all" book about the Palin clan. No other details were available.
