Arizona Republican Senator John McCain does not believe his former vice presidential running mate actually quit, in spite of her resignation.
Speaking to David Gregory on NBC's Meet the Press this morning, McCain expressed his surprise at Sarah Palin's unexpected announcement that she would be leaving her job as Alaska's governor. Pressed on this point, McCain said he was not "shocked" by her move and said he understood her reasons now that they had spoken about it.
Asked what her reasons were, McCain said Palin felt like she could be of better service to Alaskans and Americans by stepping down from her governorship.
Nevertheless, "I don't think she quit," he said. "I think she changed her priorities."
And, he's right.
"I will go around the country on behalf of candidates who believe in the right things, regardless of their party label or affiliation," Palin told The Washington Times, according to a Sunday report.
For Palin, who likely has an eye on running for the presidency in 2012, that can only mean one thing: Guaranteed presence in the media.
While I'm no partisan, it seems easy to predict a month-long Internet politigasm the minute she stumps for her first Blue Dog Democrat.
Will it happen? I'm siding with "You bet'cha."

This is a brilliant strategic move by the Repubs. See because they don't need nor want her out there stumping for them (for obvious reasons) they make it so difficult for her to be comfortable in the Repub establishment that she has no choice but to stump for 'conservative' Dems. The Repugs ran the country into the ground WITH THE FULL COMPLICITY OF MOST OF THE DEMS (excluding Kucinich). You left that part out. Some of which can indeed be blamed on Obama (see his Bush-accomplice voting record from the senate).
And savior Obama is not "cleaning up" anything. He's continuing the Bush agenda and you would know that if you had been paying close attention since January 2009 instead of wearing partisan blinders. If Palin does run in 2012, or any time..... basically the GOP concedes that election. Imagine Palin running the US? It will be like the Peter Sellers' movie "Being There".
Some media say she is forming her own political party, to challenge Dems and Republicans. Ross Perot and Ralph Nader only messed up elections and didn't change anything, did they? And a hundred years ago, Teddy Roosevelt created the Progressive (Bull Moose) Party to challenge the Republicans and Democrats. Even as popular as Roosevelt had been--with far more achievements than Palin-- his third party did not succeed. I don't see the Republicans nominating Palin at all, unless, as you say, they want to concede the election.
If she doesn't start a new political party, she can develop this: A new career path for attractive airheads: being a campaign fixture across the country. No need to worry about a filling an office if your candidate wins--just move on to the next campaign, get people fired up.
Of course, this career path does have pitfalls. If a candidate loses, it will be difficult to get hired by another campaign. It might help to practice a speech emphasizing that even though the candidate was not elected, he/she did not lose. Nosiree, the candidate will simply find a higher calling.
