Some 'birthers' vote yes on motion declaring Obama born in Hawaii

The US House of Representatives passed a resolution Monday recognizing the 50th anniversary of Hawaii's entry into the Union, which also included a statement declaring that "President Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on Aug. 4, 1961."

The resolution passed by a vote of 378 to zero, with 55 House representatives not voting.

"While the resolution was considered routine, the national media picked up on the action because of attacks by fringe groups that do not believe Obama was born in Hawaii," reported the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

Whether the "birthers" on Capitol Hill were unaware of the clause declaring the president's birthplace, or whether they chose simply to ignore it, is unclear.

Eric Kleefeld at Talking Points Memo reports that several high-profile "birthers" -- people who believe President Obama is not eligible to be president because his birth certificate is a fake and he was not really born in the United States -- voted in favor of the resolution.

Among the Yes votes: Rep. Bill Posey (R-FL), the lead sponsor of the infamous "Birther Bill" to require presidential candidates to present their birth certificates, and who had previously said he wouldn't "swear on a stack of Bibles" that Obama is a natural-born American citizen. Several other co-sponsors of the Birther Bill also voted yes: Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Dan Burton (R-IN), John Culberson (R-TX), Bob Goodlatte (R-VA), Randy Neugebauer (R-TX), and Ted Poe (R-TX).

RAW STORY reported Monday that the tide may be turning against the "birthers," as evidenced by the reluctance of many elected Republicans to talk about the issue.

The "birther" movement, which has been around since before President Obama was elected, got a large boost from CNN host Lou Dobbs in recent weeks, who raised the ire of media watchdog groups recently by giving considerable airtime to "birthers."

I wonder if it's possible to have a dumber bunch of morons in elected positions than these lunatics? Hmmmm, probably not.

  2. I wonder if people in this country will ever pay attention to the issues and not get side tracked by suptid stuff. Sad.

  3. Oh, gee, can I have Congress declare that my birthday is on December 25th to bolster my claim I'm the new messiah? At the same time, please declare that my penis is 8" long so that all my girlfriends will stop complaining.

  4. DownriverDem

14,000 Americans lose their health care daily. 25 million Americans are underinsured.

This is the issue tha t should be dealt with big time.

When is the GOP going to ditch those nuts who insist on saying Obama wasn't born in the USA?

Oh yea, they are a big part of the GOP base and are stuck with them.

    Can we now move on???????

  5. I wonder why those 55 did not vote? A mix of 35 DEMS and 20 GOPers? That to me is an interesting question, right Mr. Waxman and Ms. Waters (both big time lib DEMS)... how do we ask them, I poner? LOL...

  6. That's "ponder" not poner - what the hell is poner, anyway? LOL... Um... I found it, and I don't even speak Spanish, to wit:

"poner" (first-person singular present pongo, first-person singular preterite puse, past participle puesto) (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/poner)

  7. Axekick

The American people need an insider in their own congress. If we had one we could get that person to write and submit legislation ordering all members to resign within 6 months and establishing term limits on future congressman. They would vote, without reading it or without applying logic, just as they always do.

  8. Birthers. These are the same people who absolutely refused to have an open discussion about 9/11 and allow an independent investigation. They dismissed legitimate questions as "conspiracy theory," yet when the State of Hawaii issues his birth certificate, they call it a fake without actually presenting any evidence, or even a cogent argument calling it into question, and their minions lap it up because they hate democrats with a passion.

Furthermore, try finding John McCain's birth certificate. Guess what? None exists. There isn't even a record of his live birth at the hospital he claims to have been born at, despite complete records for dozens of other American nationals born in the same hospital in the same month and year.

Drorez, you nailed it. The Republicans seem to be spending a lot of time on efforts to command news cycles. Sometimes, it's best to turn off the tv and read page 2.

The unholy alliance between Democrats and Republicans holds fast on war crimes, war, torture, supporting big business and screwing the American citizen out of rights freedoms and health care.

The wave of corporate media stories this week linking 'birthers' and 911truthers is a big wave, big and unrelenting. It is disgusting. Clearly this site got the memo and played along.

The 911 truth movement is made up of all sorts of different people from all across America.
Engineers, anarchists, architects, hippies, professional pilots, Rosie O'Donnell fans, military personnel, rap artists, law enforcement personnel, rich and poor, Democrats and Republicans along with family members of those murdered.

The greatest asset of the 911 truth movement is simply that they are right. The pathetic government storyline supported by Democrats and Republicans does not hold up. Debate is not an option for swine like Obama or Bush on this topic.
So a smear campaign is in progress. No surprise that MSNBC, CNN, Fox and CBS would play along, but rawstory? Why does rawstory hate America?

How can we as a nation elect a group of people that have such a difficult time believing the overwhelming amount of empirical evidence? It is the peoples vote that allows these people to be in office. The same people that do not believe in evolution (and some don't believe in dinosaurs!). Our educational system must teach logical thought processes and research techniques.

It'd be so much nicer if we could just put these birthers in some kind of a FEMA labor camp.

  15. stevelaudig

Nice try but under international law, the Hawaiian Islands are not part of the U.S. No treaty of annexation. No treaty, no merger. The Hawaiian Islands are occupied by the U.S. not a part of it. But having a mom from Kansas saves his citizenship.

  16. Veronica

Congress passes a resolution stating that Obama was born in Hawaii ... this, folks, is a fine example of our tax dollars hard at work. Un-fucking-believable.

Well, I can think of one way to rein in wasteful government spending ... stop paying these idiots in Congress ...

    Satan:

    A most EXCELLENT suggestion!!

  17. akronsux

However, Hawaii is a state. State citizens are US citizens. Hawaii became a state in 1959 making anyone born there 1963 a citizen not only of Hawaii but of the United States of America. That is how it works in this country. If you are born in a US State you are a US Citizen. There is a case to be made for their autonomy but that has to do with the Kingdom of Hawaii's rights of self-government, but since it is a state any US citizen living there is still a citizen.

  18. miss skeptic

    Hey abraham, I laughed!

Seriously, I think it was wrong to pass such a resolution, because it gives credibility to the birthers, that they deserve an answer to their questions. This discussion would have just gone away. Now what will Lou Dobbs have to bitch about?

It's past time we institute a sanity test for anyone planning to run for office. With the lunatics we have in office, sanity seems like a basic requirement. Perhaps after determining their sanity, we can require an IQ above 10. I'm tired of the nuttiness, the bold-faced lying, and the lack of reason evident in too many of our representatives.

....The kingdom established by King Kamehameha lasted until 1893, when the last Hawaiian monarch, Queen Lili'uokalani, was overthrown in a coup led by supporters of the Reform Party of the Hawaiian Kingdom and replaced by a Provisional Government, and later a Republic.

I propose making Obama the king of Hawaii as it would serve to traumatize the 'birthers' even further and perhaps finally push Glen Beck into a raving fit of lunacy from which he would never return.

  21. Jackie

Some on Fox News want to see the video of Obama's birth while no US President has been required such proof. Now we see the 50th celebration yet Obama is 47 years old. Now we do have proof Senator McCain is not a natural born citizen of the United States as he wasn't born on US soil. Yes the US later Grandfathered births but it clearly wouldn't cover the requirement of the USA. So Sarah Palin was born on US soil and would have to replace McCain as President. Then Todd Palin would be acting President while Sarah goes on a shopping spree with US taxpayers money. No need to discuss Foreign Policy as Sarah thinks she can see Russia from her window and gets her news from a Starbuck cup. Yes it would have been the Second Great Depression for sure or maybe Americans would demand Bush/Cheney take back the Office of the White House. It seems we just want to destroy ourselves with the bottom feeders like Bush, Limbaugh, Boehner, Cantor, Pelosi, Feinstein, Dodd and so many other idiots. I've noticed how most of both Republican/Democrats Leaders have an alcoholic problem as their actions on TV are like drunks and their eyes are glassy. Who knows some might be on drugs because no one is as stupid as they sound.

  22. Abraham, what the hell, why not go for 10!

  23. berfel

Wow! This guy makes $10 million to act like an asshole? I can do that! Where do I send my résumé?

  24. hardrain77

Why pass a silly resolution and then hide your Obama validation inside the resolution? Wouldn't it just be better off and nip it in the bud to go to Hawaii, produce the original document, not the copied 'certification of live birth' which they have now and put this thing to rest?

This story ain't going away; especially not when you have to pass resolutions and choose not to fight this thing in court like is being threatened.

  25. berfel

    Clarification: Lou Dobbs, that is.

  26. Veronica

    hardrain77

Sigh. This non-story won't go away because of assholes like you. You cannot possibly be this fucking dense. Okay, like I told one of your truthy birthers on another thread, go to local town hall or health department in the town you were born. Tell the town clerk or the health department official to give you your ORIGINAL birth certificate. When they stop laughing at you, they will kindly explain to you that no town, city, county, or state will give you an original certificate. However, they will also tell you that you can get a CERTIFIED copy of your birth certificate, for a fee. Please do come back here and tell us how you made out.

Said town clerk or health department official will also tell you, once they stop laughing at you, that a certificate of live birth, and a birth certificate are one and the same document. Some states use birth certificate, some use certificate of live birth. Either way, it's the same fucking document.

And, this non-story is moot - even if Obama was born in Borneo, he'd STILL be a U.S. citizen. Pursuant to immigration law, even if ONE parent is a U.S. citizen, said parent's offspring acquire citizenship the moment they are born - it's call citizenship by acquisition. If you don't believe me, use the internet tubes and go to findlaw.com, where it CLEARLY states that this little factoid is LAW.

Jesus H. Christ in a wheelchair, you people are beyond fucking retarded.

  27. Doc

Everyone check the law. His mother was an American citizen there for so is he. Where he is born does not matter. State the fact this way and they should all shut up.

If you continue to profess he is not an American then you are either a racist or stupid and you could be both.

    Wrong.

    "The annexation of Hawaii
    June 15, 1898

By an overwhelming vote of 209 to 91, the House approved Senate Joint Resolution 55 providing for the annexation of Hawaii as an American territory."

    http://clerk.house.gov/art_history/highlights.html?action=view&intID=341

Hawaii was annexed as a Territory, and achieved Statehood as historically reported.

I can guarantee you that your very own birth certificate has a lot more information than what we've seen from Obama. I have a certified copy with all the works in it. What the Obama people released isn't even valid enough to buy a house with in Hawaii.

I for one believe he was born in Hawaii, but why not show the real cold hard proof?

Nothing like beating the already dead horse to a bloody pulp, huh? What he provided is the short form, which some states do issue in lieu of the long form - it's still a perfectly legal document. What he provided enabled him to register in U.S. schools, enabled him to obtain a drivers license, enabled him to obtain a passport, and so on, and so on ...

Did his parents falsify is birth records because they knew one day he'd be president?

Is the governor of Hawaii lying?

Is the Hawaii Department of Health lying?

Are the two newspapers in Hawaii that printed his birth announcements in 1961 lying?

The birth certificate is besides the point - even if he WASN'T born on U.S. soil, HIS MOTHER WAS A U.S. CITIZEN.

"U.S. citizenship can be obtained in one of four ways:

birth in the United States or its territories
birth to U.S. citizen parents (called "acquisition" of citizenship)
naturalization (obtaining citizenship after an application and exam), or
naturalization of one's parents (called "derivation" of citizenship).

Birth to U.S. Citizen Parents ("Acquisition")
In many circumstances, even though a child is born outside the United States, if at least one parent was a U.S. citizen at the time of the child's birth, the child automatically "acquires" citizenship. When this child marries and has children, those children may also acquire U.S. citizenship at birth."

    http://immigration.findlaw.com/immigration/immigration-citizenship-naturalization/immigration-citizenship-naturalization-did-you-know.html

Once again, I will point out that no one - NO ONE - can obtain their ORIGINAL birth certificate, also known as a certificate of live birth. The ONLY certificate any town hall or health department will issue is a CERTIFIED certificate. Try obtaining your original certificate ... go ahead, see how far you get.

Sorry, I tend to believe the law, the fucking governor, the health department, the hospital, and the goddamned newspapers, not some tool with a website on the internet ... Good fucking dog, it's not brain surgery.

  34. honchocho

There are actually several issues involved in this question and non have been answered with any clarity.

As the constitution requires a person to serve as president needs to be a natural born citizen. There is only 2 ways for that to occur, either both parents are US citizens or the child is born on US soil.

Many here think the issue is just over the birth certificate, it is not.

The certificate of live birth presented by the Obama supporters as evidence is not actually a birth certificate. It is a computer generated short copy. The problem with the Hawaii short copy is that anyone could get one even if born in another country. If right after the birth of a child, the parent/parents moved to or entered the state of Hawaii they could apply for one. It is a record of a child being born live, it doesn't have the details that a real birth certificate has.

There are many aspects of US daily life requiring legal identity that will not accept a certificate of live birth.

The issue of Obama's mother passing citizenship is questionable, because US law at the time required a residency period. Obama's mother did not meet those requirements, because she was not old old enough at the the time of his birth.

    The code at the time:
a person born outside the geographical limits of the United States and its outlying possessions of parents one of whom is an alien, and the other a citizen of the United States who, prior to the birth of such person, was physically present in the United States or its outlying possessions for a period or periods totaling not less than ten years, at least four of which were after attaining the age of fourteen years.

Of course being a citizen is different then being a natural born citizen.

Then there is the Indonesia question. Because Indonesia didn't recognize dual citizenship at the time of his adoption, Obama should have lost his US citizenship. The US in a reciprocal agreement doesn't recognize dual citizenship if the other country doesn't. Indonesia didn't recognize dual citizenship when Obama was adopted. Obama had to of become an Indonesia citizen when he was adopted and attended school in Indonesia.

The lack of supporting evidence, conflicting stories and secrecy regarding Obama's birth also raises questions. Here we have the first "black" (actually 1/2 black) president of this country and no one has come forward to claim they delivered him. No nurses have said they were present, no neighbors say they saw him come home from the hospital. There are then the conflicting stories by Obama family members as to which country or hospital he was born in. There is a total lack of cohesiveness on this issue from the family. It is also interesting to note that the citizens of Kenya almost universally believe he was born there.

The question is then exacerbated by Obama's unwillingness to put the matter to rest. All he has to do is show his actual birth certificate. He mentions finding it in his book. Instead of presenting it, Obama goes to great lengths to hide and secret his past. He not only seals his birth records, but everything that would show his nationality. He is so unwilling to open up, that he has spent close to a million dollars in legal fees to keep his past a secret.

I don't know if Obama is a natural born citizen. Is it important? I think so if we are going to make any kind of real effort to follow the constitution. Is Obama hiding something? I believe so.

In the end, the truth will come out!
