Well, how do you like that. There's a local paper in Merced, California that has some balls.
Here's the skinny, from Merced Sun-Star reporter Jonah Owen Lamb:
In the past several months Atwater City Councilman Gary Frago has sent at least a half-dozen e-mails to city staff and other prominent community members containing racist jokes aimed at President Barack Obama, his wife and black people in general.
In all, the Sun-Star obtained seven e-mails that Frago sent from October 2008 to February 2009 from an anonymous source.
Some compared Obama to O.J. Simpson while others suggested that "nigger rigs" should now be called "presidential solutions."
Perhaps the most overboard e-mail was sent on Jan. 15. It read: "Breaking News Playboy just offered Sarah Palin $1 million to pose nude in the January issue. Michelle Obama got the same offer from National Geographic."
Frago admitted sending the e-mails, but showed no regret. "If they're from me, then I sent them," he said. "I have no disrespect for the president or anybody, they weren't meant in any bad way or harm."
The paper goes on to reveal that the recipient list "reads like a who's who of Atwater community and political leadership."
But what really caught my eye is what came next: the reporter literally went down the line of recipients, calling them out each by name and notoriety and including either their silence or response to his queries.
This article should be read by student journalists the nation over, many of whom will find their first paid writing work in their own communities. It very clearly illustrates how a local paper should report on community leaders.
I have a history in the local news business, and if I do say so myself, THIS is how it should be done. All too often, local news works in quite the opposite fashion. It takes courage to stand up to people who could affect your organization's quarterly bottom line.
The paper continued to show its stripes the following day, publishing a letter from one Gary J. Wilmot in defense of the councilman. Mr. Wilmot even went after the reporter, calling the piece "a biased report" that "selectively quoted some local residents," neglecting positive remarks.
"Reporter Jonah Owen Lamb seems to relish writing negatively on Frago," he jibed.
While I of course do not know the individuals involved and would be very hesitant to make character judgments about complete strangers, I can admire the audacity of this paper, giving a fair shake to both sides. But from my perspective, it's only natural that a reporter would have carefully edited out comments not relevant to the subject. It's superfluous, and neglects the point -- otherwise known as "The News" -- which this respondent refuses to acknowledge.
The good people of Merced, California should be thankful. They are looked after by one of the most valuable things any community can have: an independent-minded newspaper.

At the risk of painting with a broad brush, I take it these are Republicans. These occurrences are very nearly a daily thing. This party seems to be filled with even more racists then we knew existed in this one party. And we should not forget just how much work needs to be done to stamp out of our country. Racism exists because the so called nice people, the civilized people who would never say such things or send the emails or even repeat such language, none the less by their silence allow racism to flourish. The only way to stamp it out, is to call out the people who say it. To shine the light of reason and fight it out every time it rears it's ugly head.
I am fed up with it. I had hoped by this time and this century we would be well past this. What kind of country are we living in where this still exists. And what kind of people are we that we still allow it? We deserve to fail as a country when disdain for the race of another exists in such proportions. No, they do not. I left them in 2000 and am an Independent for the reasons you cite. Mainly, the Limbaugh-ite's propensity for banging on the Constitution, the rule of law, personal accountability and fiscal responsibility when it is in their interest to do so, then completely disregarding these concepts when there is a benefit to be derived from it.

Since we are both independents I am not surprised that I agree with a lot you have to say. I think we differ on Obama. I see him as a bright young man with the energy to put in 12 hours a day which is what it takes. I think he knows,as does much of the country,we can not survive another 8 years like the last.
