The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee has called for both a criminal investigation and a blue-ribbon panel to look into "Bush administration abuses of power and misconduct."
Rep. John Conyers (D-MI) told the National Press Club Friday that both avenues should be pursued because a criminal investigation would be done in private, while a blue-ribbon "9/11-type" panel would work publicly and would create a public record of the Bush administration's actions.
Conyers also slammed former Bush administration officials who are refusing to testify before the judiciary committee. He rejected the notion that "executive privilege" prevents Bush White House officials from answering questions before Congressional committees.
"Wait a minute," he said, "you don't know what questions we're going to ask."
"If we ask a question that you think can't be answered, we can set it aside ... but the blanket [notion that] anybody near the White House doesn't have to come to a hearing, that wouldn't wash at my son's freshman class at Moorhouse College in Atlanta much less with me."
"Congress's role has been diminished as the President's executive role has increased," Conyers warned, adding that his committee is "in the process of enforcing" subpoenas against Bush-era White House counsel Harriet Myers and former Chief of Staff Josh Bolton.
Earlier this month, news reports indicated that Attorney-General Eric Holder is considering appointing a special prosecutor to investigate Bush-era misconduct.

yanaar, I appreciate your comment, however it is not quite true that Conyers has been consistent in prosecuting Bush and Cheney. If that were the case, then Conyers would have remained consistent with his rhetoric, and opposed Nancy Pelosi's decision to "take impeachment off the table". Instead Conyers did a 180, and also opposed investigations that would have been the basis for impeachment in the Senate.

When Cheney admitted that the only way to deal effectively with evil was to cross over to the dark side, he was in fact professing the only strategy that will work against him and his cohort evil doers that left the White House back in January. I see little chance Washington will have the will, fortitude and courage to get to the bottom of the criminality that took over our country in 2001.

We even delivered to Rep. Conyers a petition with over 1,100,000 signatures asking him to start Impeachment Hearings.
The 80 year old congressman who has been in office for 40+ years used to have a great liberal reputation. Conyers has been described as the “powerful Chairman of the Judiciary Committee” but has accomplished very little in protecting our Constitution from the ravages of the Bush-Cheney Administration or bringing violators of our Federal Anti-Torture Laws to justice.
His House Committee is where the Impeachment Process had to be started.
Conyers has been a big disappointment to Impeachment and Torture Accountability Advocates. He portrayed himself as the Champion of Impeachment in the House, but blocked Impeachment for years and kept Rep. Kucinich’s Bush-Cheney Impeachment Bills from ever being seriously debated in his committee or voted on.
Conyers accepted an IMPEACHMENT PETITION SIGNED BY 1.1 MILLION VOTERS but IGNORED IT AND HAD THOSE DELIVERING IT ARRESTED. He never mentioned the 1.1 Million Signature Petition after that day.

ANY investigation is going to be a joke just like the 9/11 commision. If you want it to work or to be a legitimate investigation then you have to hire third party people to do it.

Considering the devastation and destruction the Bushnazi's have inflicted upon our great country for the last 8 years at the cost of a false war in Iraq(seems like we should've learned from Vietnam!), these self-serving Repubs still want to sabotage and destroy any chance the American people have to freedom of speech, stopping the military from taking us over(Bush almost did in 2004 and 2008!) and actually causing us to become a Communist type of government! I think we all realize now that the federal government no longer represents the people, is communistic, where profits are privatized and losses are socialized and the enemy is us. There is also a flavoring of facist dictatorship too.

Unless you believe in magic, placing the word "constitution" on four pieces of parchment that nobody ever bothered to sign doesn't legally bind ANYBODY 220 years down the road. Think about it.
